II. III. **IV. The Pagan** The kingdom of Pagan rose in Northern Burma (present- day Myanmar) around the 11th century. Burma and Sri Lanka are both followers of Theravada Buddhism. They used sacred texts written in Pali or the ancient language used in Buddhist texts. While Kyanzittha is recognized as one of the most important Pagan kings who ruled between 1084- 1112. He built Shwezigon Stupa and Nanda Temple. Under Kayanzittha's leadership Theravada Buddhism became the center of Burmese life. The Pagan Kingdom fell with the entry of the Thai. ![](media/image2.jpg) **V. The Ayutthaya** With the fall of the Pagan kingdom, Ayutthaya reigned in what is now Thailand. The kingdom of Ayutthaya was founded by U Thong who came from the ranks of Chinese merchants and used the title Ramathibodi. The kingdom of Ayutthaya fell to constant warfare with the Burmese in the 18th century. **VI. Summary:** Funan was a kingdom established in present- day Cambodia around the first century. Ayutthaya was founded in the late 13th century in present- day Thailand. Theravada Buddhisn flourished in the kingdom. The construction of Buddhist temples is considered the heritage of the kingdom.
