One of these people was Fatima Meer. She was an antiapartheid activ ist. , Fatima Meer was born in Durba n in 1928 and died in 2010. , Fatima Meer's mothe r had Jewish and Portug uese parents. Her father was a Muslim from Durba n's Indian community. Her mothe r becam e Musli m when she marrie d Fatima 's father. • Fatima Meer believ ed strong ly in human rights and equality. • She worked to build good relationships betwe en Africa n and Indian people in South Africa . This started in Durba n in 1949 when there were race riots. • She believed in the passive resistance teachings of Gandhi. Gandh i was an Indian lawye r who fought for human rights in South Africa and India. • She was involved in many campaigns to fight for freedom and human rights in South Africa . She wrote many books and became famous around the world as a voice for human rights. She worke d hard to help poor and needy people. She set up schools and other servic es for Africa n and Indian people. Fatima Meer spoke out agains t apartheid and is one of the most famous antiapartheid activis ts in our history. When people see it, it should remind them of their identity as South Africans. South Africa's Coat of Arms was presented to the public in 2000 on Freedom Day, which _ is 27 April. • Our Coat of Arms symbolises South Africa's democracy. • The oval shape is made by elephant tusks and ears of wheat.
