Meanwhile, Prasad, who has no hearing difficulties, enjoys building with colourful blocks and listening to the sounds they make when they snap together. Why do Ella and Prasad play with their blocks in different ways? Getting Started Ella and Prasad play with their blocks differently because they experience and interact with the world in their own unique ways. Just like their different play styles, each child in the classroom has their own special needs and abilities, which contribute to the richness and diversity of the classroom environment. Valuing the individuality of each student lays the foundation for embracing inclusive practices. In this subunit, we shall learn about the uniqueness of every child and the importance of inclusive education in celebrating this diversity. We will explore its significance in providing equitable opportunities for all learners, as well as the fundamental principles guiding its implementation. 1. Introduction to Inclusive Education 2.1. Meaning of Inclusive Education Inclusive education refers to an educational model that ensures all students receive tailored and quality education in the same classroom, independent of their abilities or disabilities. The National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, promotes inclusive education as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act of 2016. The policy advocates for the full integration and active involvement of children with special needs (CWSN) at every level of school education. 2.2. Importance of Inclusive Education Inclusive education goes beyond academic learning by promoting the holistic development. The importance of inclusive education is given as follows: Self-Development: In an inclusive environment, students are encouraged to embrace their unique identities and abilities without fear of judgment or exclusion. This acceptance fosters a sense of belonging and confidence, allowing learners to openly explore their strengths and weaknesses. Inclusive education offers a setting allows learners with disabilities to freely express their views and engage in activities with their peers. Skill Development: The primary focus of an inclusive setting is to improve the children’s abilities irrespective of their disabilities. Inclusive education ensures that all learners actively participate in curricular and extracurricular activities. Inclusive education fosters various skills such as communication, problem-solving, empathy, leadership and social skills, preparing students for success in a diverse world. Social Development: Within an inclusive environment, regardless of disability status, all learners enjoy equal opportunities and responsibilities, thereby contributing to societal equality. Inclusive education is instrumental in promoting social equality by providing equal opportunities to all learners. By enhancing the educational system, students experience improved growth trajectories, enabling them to influence society positively. As a result, inclusive education advances the prosperity of nations by ensuring that all individuals, without discrimination, can contribute their talents and skills to society. Empowering Learners Empowerment is a central principle of inclusive education, particularly for disabled learners. Valuing Dignity Inclusive education asserts that every student is deserving of being treated with respect, receiving an education that acknowledges and honours their abilities and potential. 2.4. In educational contexts, equity signifies the fair and impartial distribution of resources, opportunities and support to ensure that all students, regardless of their background, abilities or circumstances, have the resources and support they need to succeed. In practical terms, equity means addressing the systemic barriers and disparities, preventing certain groups of students from achieving their full potential. Equality strives to provide all students with identical resources, while equity focuses on establishing a fair and unbiased learning environment. For example, equality means providing the same learning resources to all students, regardless of their specific needs. Equity means providing additional screen readers as assistive technology to children with visual impairment. The application of equity in education involves several vital strategies: Resource Allocation: Schools and educational systems must allocate resources, such as funding, personnel and facilities, in a way that addresses the specific needs of all students. This allocation may involve providing additional support for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, including access to technology and transportation. Access to Quality Education: Equity targets all students to avail a high- quality education, irrespective of where they live or their circumstances. This strategy may involve reducing class sizes, improving teacher training, and offering diverse curricular options to meet the needs of diverse learners. Inclusive Practices: Equity in education also entails creating inclusive learning environments where every student feels valued and respected. These practices may include providing accommodations for students with disabilities and fostering a sense of belonging for students from marginalised communities. Community Engagement: Achieving equity in education requires collaboration and partnership between schools, families, communities and policymakers. This collaboration may involve engaging caregivers in decision-making, partnering with community organisations to provide additional support services, and advocating for policies that promote equity and social justice in education.
