Over time, the monks grew to resent his radical way of life, and sought to dispose of him by poisoning his wine. Upon blessing the wine, the glass shattered, and the monks' treachery was revealed. Due to the outbreak of the 1896 Revolution, they were left with no choice but to go to Manila. The monks turned over the missions to the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in 1909. The monks eventually acquired a house on Balmes St., Tanduay, in the district of Quiapo, Manila, on April 25, 1896. Fr. Juan Sabater, OSB, then superior of the Benedictines, thought of counteracting the influence of the public schools established by the American government and the American Protestant missionaries. The idea of establishing an educational institution which offers elementary and high school classes and a boarding school for boys was formulated. Coupled with this was the need of sustaining the monastic community with suitable apostolate for its members. The Benedictine monks had a schoolhouse ready at the corner of Arlegui and Tanduay streets for the opening of classes on June 17, 1901. The school opened with 212 students taking primaria enseñanza and secundaria enseñanza, the equivalent respectively of grade school and high school with the first two years of college. Colegio de San Beda, was inaugurated with Fr. Silvestre Jofre, OSB, as first Rector. 2
