**Ethics** is a set of principles and values that help us to judge what is morally good or bad; right or wrong.   **Norms** are a standard or pattern of behaviour that is acceptable or expected within a particular social group e.g. Family, club, society.   **Morals** are standards of behaviour that a person may try to follow or live up to in order to be considered good and right by other members of a society e.g. Being honest, showing respect with others, being faithful, showing kindness. **Values** are beliefs about what is important or desirable - Personal values are the principles, standards of behaviour and qualities that every person relies on to help them guide how they live their life. - Factors that influence the development of personal values: family, peers, coaches, school, community - Value system is the relative priorities that you give to different values - Value structure is how comparable your values are with each other.   General areas of ethical problems: - Doping for improved performance - On-field violence - \'sledging\', racism, sexism, homophobia - On-field behaviour towards officials - Off-field behaviour in relation to gender, sexuality and sexual assault, substance abuse and recreation drug use and violence - Institutional fraud - Cheating - Gambling, betting and match fixing - Coaching and management practices   **Integrity** is the quality of having strong morals and personal values. A person with integrity does what they say they will do, in accordance with their values, beliefs and principles.   Sporting integrity has three sources of ethics: - The participants on the sport - The sporting institutions who control the sport - The sport itself The interplay of these three ethical sources shapes our concepts of sporting integrity   **Fair Play** is following the rules of competition and showing respect, fairness, friendship and tolerance to others (both on and off the field).   There are seven elements of fair play: - Observing the rules - Demonstrating appropriate attitudes and behaviours - Eliminating forms of exploitation (act of violence, cheating, drug use, sledging) - Fair competition and equality - Respect - Team spirit - Respect for written and unwritten rules
