ES Intro Chapters 1 and 2 Teacher: Mr. Abdul What is Environmental Science? It’s not only ALL of the sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.) but also Humanities, Health Science, Law & Government, Ethics, Math, English, Cultural Studies, etc. … (see Syllabus in Google Classroom) What we will learn: 1. How the natural world works 2. How to identify and analyze the environmental issues that are occurring (natural & human made) 3. How to evaluate the risks of these environmental issues 4. How to examine current and alternative solutions for these environmental issues. Ecological Principles (class discussion) 1. ENERGY FLOW: energy moving 2. CYCLES: repetition 3. FEEDBACK: response 4. INTERDEPENDENCE: depend on each other 5. ADAPTATION: adapt get used to 6. EMERGENCE: coming out 7. COMMUNITY: group 8. DIVERSITY: different 9. THE WHOLE IS GREATER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS: were better together than apart Anthropocentric vs Ecocentric ► Anthropocentric…. - The belief that humans are the central or most important entity in the universe - Anthro= Human - Centric= Centre - Human Centre - Everything is centered around humans Humans view ourselves as charged with a caretaking or nurturing mission with respect to the rest of Nature. Humans believe everything revolves around them. Anthropocentric vs Ecocentric ► Ecocentric …. - Ecocentrism finds inherent (intrinsic) value in all of nature - A branch of thought that finds intrinsic value in all living organisms - Ecocentric= Environment Center - Intrinsic= Everything is important - You find value in all creatures Anthropocentric vs Ecocentric ► - What is the difference between an anthropocentric and ecocentric view? Anthropocentrism and Ecocentrism are two ways of understanding and extension to nature. In an anthropocentric ethic nature deserves moral consideration because how nature is treated affects humans. In an ecocentric ethic nature deserves moral consideration because nature has intrinsic value. Tragedy of the Commons The Tragedy of the Commons refers to a situation in which individuals with access to a public resource (also called a common) act in their own interest and, in doing so, ultimately deplete (decrease) the resource. - When people act on their selfish need and abuse a resource. 1. An example would be overpopulation and how some people can take housings 2. Gas prices controlled by companies that act on their own interest - Traditional examples of commons are forests, fisheries and groundwater resources since everyone shares these resources. Tragedy of the Commons 3. How is it demonstrated? It is demonstrated through many ways. Air pollution, Deforestation, Water Pollution, etc Tragedy of the Commons 4. How do we overcome these issues? The Tragdey of Commons to occur, resource must be scarce (little resource), rivalrous (rivals) in consumption, and non excludable. - Country A versus Country B 1- Define clear group boundaries 2- Match rules governing use of goods to local needs and conditions 3- Ensure those affected by the rules can participate in modifying the rules ((We can change) 4- Make sure the rule making rights of community members are respected by outside authorities (Mr Abdullahi can’t be above the rules he makes for us) 5- Develop a system carried out by community members for monitoring members behavior 6- Use graduate sanctions (appropriate punishments) for rule violators ENTRY 1- Tragedy of the Commons 1. What is the Tragedy of the Commons? 2. How was it demonstrated in today's activity? ENTRY 1- Tragedy of the Commons & Easter Island 3. Write a half-page summary of what happened on Easter Island. 4. How does Easter Island exemplify the Tragedy of the Commons? 5. In what ways is our Earth and Easter Island similar and different?
