The word ‘environment’ is used in different contexts. We hear, about the ‘internal environment’ the ‘home environment’, the ‘work environment’ and the ‘social environment’. Most often than not, the word environment refers to our physical surroundings, which encompasses the air we breathe, the trees, the rocks and hills, etc. Contents: The course covers topics such as introduction to environmental management, sustainable development, environmental management systems, environmental impact assessment, disaster management, environmental governance, environmental regulatory instruments, climate change, sustainable tourism and environmental governance. COURSE GOALS This course is designed to introduce students to the concept of the environment beyond simply making reference to physical surroundings; but expanding their understanding of the interrelatedness that exist thus making the environment central to development and to achieving all developmental goals. Management skills are applied to control the human- environment interaction and to support development in an environmentally friendly manner. The course also critically examines some contemporary thinking on environmental themes including: sustainable development and climate change. LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this course, the student will be able to: Explain the concept of Environmental management Discuss the management approaches adopted in dealing with the environmental problems identified Use the skills acquired in to propose practical local solutions which will drive development Identify regulatory approaches and make informed choices about those that are best suited for a given situation WEEKLY UNIT SPECIFIC TOPICS ACTIVITY/COMMENTS SCHEDULE First Meeting 1 An overview and Introduction In your opinion who has the to Environmental responsibility of managing the Management environment and why?
