ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPTMENT Presented by Group 4 ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS Environmental crisis is characterized by rapid and largely unpredictable changes in the nature of the environment, which are, if not difficult to reverse. Examples will be massive extinctions and substantial destruction of the ecosystem. SUSTAINBLE DEVELOPMENT The idea of sustainable development can be interpreted in several different ways, but at its heart is a development strategy that seeks to balance different and sometimes conflicting needs against an understanding of the environmental, social and economic limitations that we face as a society. FACT OR S FE CT ING TH E AF N T EN VIR ON ME SH FLO O D FLA N EXTINCTIO C TIO N A ND E S TR U HABITAT D PO LLU TIO N ND A IR WATER A GE E C HA N CLIMAT ASHFLOOD FL It is refers to rising and overflowing of a body of water especially onto normally dry land. CAUSES OF FLASH FLOOD HEAVY RAIN Each time there are more rains than the drainage system can take ,there can be floods. Sometimes there is heavy rain for a very short period that result in floods In other times there may be lights rain for many days and weeks and can also result in floods. DEFORESTATION If there is more water upstream than usual , and as it flows downstream to the adjacent low-lying areas , there is a burst and water gets into the land Dam breaking -Structural failures can release large volumes of water suddenly into surrounding areas. HABITAT DESTRUCTION AND EXTINCTION When a habitat is destroyed, the carrying capacity for indigenous plants, animals, and other organisms is reduced so that populations decline, sometimes up to the level of extinction. Pollution Air Pollution Air pollution is contamination of the indoor or outdoor environment by any chemical, physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics Water Pollution Water pollution occurs when harmful substances— often chemicals or microorganisms—contaminate a stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water, degrading water quality and rendering it toxic to humans or the environment. This widespread problem of water pollution is jeopardizing our health. THE BURNING OF FOSSIL ON AIR POLLUTION Worldwide, industrial waste from industries and industrial sites is a major cause of water contamination. Although, many industrial The burning of fossil fuels sites are controlled, others releases harmful gases such still lack adequate waste as nitrogen oxides and management systems, and sulphur oxides in the air. produce waste in the form of The water droplets combine harmful chemicals and with these pollutants, contaminants. become acidic and fall as acid rain which damages human, animal and plant life. INDUSTRIAL WASTE ON WATER POLLUTION Climate Change Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Such shifts can be natural, due to changes in the sun's activity or large volcanic eruptions. Causes of Climate Change CONSUMING TOO MUCH Your home and use of power, how you move around, what you eat and how much you throw away all contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. So does the consumption of goods such as clothing, electronics and plastics. Thank you!
