# Using Variety of Informative, Persuasive and Argumentative Writing Techniques ## What's an Argumentative Essay? * A piece of writing that aims to convince the readers to agree with the writer's stand/opinion about a controversial issue. * An argument in academic writing is usually a main idea, often called a **claim** or **thesis statement**, backed up with evidence that supports the idea. * A claim is the main argument of an essay and the writer's position on a problem or issue. ## Argumentative Text ### Features: 1. Conclusion: Call for action/Quotation ## What's an Informative Text? * Informative text is a kind of text that offers data, definitions, and descriptions of phenomena or details about a fact. * It introduces a clearly stated topic and creates an organizational structure in which related information is grouped logically to support the purpose of writing. * It develops evidence with relevant facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, and examples with references. * It also uses appropriate linking ideas within and across paragraphs to smoothly and purposefully connect the controlling idea to evidence and provides a satisfying conclusion related to the topic. ## Informative Text ### Techniques: 1. Ethos: Appeal to Authority ## Persuasive Text ### Parts: 1. **Introduction:** Catchy Hook - Trivia, a question or quotation, or an emphatic statement/Background/Definition Thesis Statement 2. **Body:** Topic Sentence, Evidences, Analysis 3. **Conclusion:** Restating, Reinforcing Call for Action ## What's an Persuasive Text? * A persuasive text is any text where the main purpose is to convince, motivate, or move readers toward a certain point of view or opinion. * A persuasive text can be an argument, exposition, discussion, review or even an advertisement. ## Must Know! * **Literary Criticism** is the evaluation, analysis, description, or interpretation of literary works. * **Critique (verb)** means to critically evaluate, analyze or give careful judgment in which you give your opinion about a literary work. * **Critique (noun)** is a detailed evaluation or analysis of a literary piece. * **Critic** is a person who judges, evaluates, or analyzes a literary piece. ## Etymology * The word 'formalism' derived from the word 'form' or **structure.** * The 'ism' is a belief or an approach of looking at things. # Critiquing a Literary Selection: Formalist Approach ## Sir Aljon Manabat ## Formalist Approach * It analyzes the work as a whole, the form of each individual part of the text from the individual scenes and chapters, the characters, the settings, the tone, the point of view, the theme, and all other literary elements and devices such as imagery. * It discovers the true meaning of a work by giving attention to the form or structure, elements and literary devices operating in it. **Structure/ form -** It scrutinizes the plot (chronological sequence) and the conflict in a story.
