During Viewing/ Reading Activity Read the video transcript of America’s President Barack Obama or view the video through this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKnBKq57aGw Hi everybody. This week, because Democrats and responsible Republicans came together, the government was reopened, and the threat of default was removed from our economy. There’s been a lot of discussion lately of the politics of this shutdown. But the truth is, there were no winners in this. At a time when our economy needs more growth and more jobs, the manufactured crises of these last few weeks actually harmed jobs and growth. And it’s understandable that your frustration with what goes on in Washington has never been higher. The way business is done in Washington has to change. Now that these clouds of crisis and uncertainty have lifted, we need to focus on what the majority of Americans sent us here to do – grow the economy, create good jobs, strengthen the middle class, lay the foundation for broad-based prosperity, and get our fiscal house in order for the long haul. It won’t be easy. But we can make progress. Specifically, there are three places where I believe that Democrats and Republicans can work together right away. First, we should sit down and pursue a balanced approach to a responsible budget, one that grows our economy faster and shrinks our long-term deficits further. There is no choice between growth and fiscal responsibility – we need both. So we’re making a serious mistake if a budget doesn’t focus on what you’re focused on: creating more good jobs that pay better wages. If we’re going to free up resources for the things that help us grow – education, infrastructure, research – we should cut what we don’t need, and close corporate tax loopholes that don’t help create jobs. This shouldn’t be as difficult as it has been in past years. Remember, our deficits are shrinking – not growing. Second, we should finish the job of fixing our broken immigration system. There’s already a broad coalition across America that’s behind this effort, from business leaders to faith leaders to law enforcement. It would grow our economy. It would secure our borders. The Senate has already passed a bill with strong bipartisan support. Now the House should, too. The majority of Americans thinks this is the right thing to do. It can and should get done by the end of this year. Third, we should pass a farm bill – one that America’s farmers and ranchers can depend on, one that protects vulnerable children and adults in times of need, and one that gives rural communities opportunities to grow and the longer-term certainty they deserve. We won’t suddenly agree on everything now that the cloud of crisis has passed. But we shouldn’t hold back on places where we do agree, just because we don’t think it’s good politics, or just because the extremes in our parties don’t like compromise. I’ll look for willing partners from either party to get important work done. There’s no good reason why we can’t govern responsibly, without lurching from manufactured 3 City of Good Character DISCIPLINE GOOD TASTE EXCELLENCE crisis to manufactured crisis. Because that isn’t governing – it’s just hurting the people we were sent here to serve. Those of us who have the privilege to serve this country have an obligation to do our job the best we can. We come from different parties, but we’re Americans first. And our obligations to you must compel all of us, Democrats and Republicans, to cooperate, and compromise, and act in the best interests of this country we love. Thanks everybody, and have a great weekend. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/obama-government-shutdown_n_4127940 B. Post Reading Activity 1. What kind of issue is presented in the text? ____________________________________________________________________ 2. Is the main idea directly stated? What is the main idea? ____________________________________________________________________ 3. What are the top priorities of the government he presented to the two parties, Democrats and Republicans? _____________________________________________________________________ 4. How is the speech written? Describe (give the qualities) _____________________________________________________________________ 5. What is the purpose of the writer? _____________________________________________________________________ 6. Do you think he will achieve his purpose? Why? _____________________________________________________________________ What Is It Students like you are oftentimes ask to view video clip or trailer, or read text for classroom discussion, appreciation, or for research. When doing so, it is vital to check and consider the relevance and truthfulness of information. For we all deserve to get the “truth” and useful or relevant to us. With the advent of internet and multimedia, information is readily available in which some are based on the writer’s opinion only. Sometimes, they are altered depending on the purpose and intentions of the writer. So the reader or viewer like you should read or view critically by being smart to know “why” the article has been written or the video has been created, and “what” the author wants you to feel, think or even do as a result of reading or viewing it. When is the idea considered relevant? It is relevant when you can connect or relate to it. Or when you find it useful and applicable at the present time. As you view a video clip or read a text, the following questions will help you evaluate if the material is relevant. 1. What is the video or text about? 2. What idea is presented by the video/ reading text? 4 City of Good Character DISCIPLINE GOOD TASTE EXCELLENCE 3. What is the goal or intention of the writer? 4. Is the idea presented applicable, true, or helpful to the society you belong, or to yourself as a person? Truthfulness is one of the important value we always look for in everything in this world. And it is also true when looking for information to achieve an honest and trustworthy communication. How would you imagine a world that is full of lies? Would it be a peaceful place to live in? How would you feel when the idea you learned is a “fake” or a false one? Maybe you would feel deceived and disrespected. More than that, there would be misunderstanding, misinformation, and chaos among the people. The idea is truthful or credible when it is based on fact, verifiable, has evidences, based on credible resources, and not misleading. Guide to Spotting Fake News (Issued by Facebook, May 2017) 1. Investigate the Source 2. Dig deeper – read beyond, check the author and the date, and find out if it is a joke 3. It is designed to deceive and to harm 2. Imposter Content – when genuine content is impersonated 3. Misleading Content – misleading use of information designed to frame an issue or individual 4. Satire or Parody – no intention to cause harm but has potential to fool 5. False Content- when genuine content is shared with false contextual information 6. False Context – when genuine content is shared with false contextual information 7. Manipulated Content – when genuine information or imagery is manipulated to deceive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f7aeTJbufI 5 City of Good Character DISCIPLINE GOOD TASTE EXCELLENCE What’s More Activity 1. The urgency of the need for concerted and comprehensive action, without waiting for the problem to peak or to impact millions more of people, is the same,” Cimatu said in a statement as the world celebrated Earth Day with the theme Climate Action. Cimatu said the health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic is a bitter reminder of how global problems like the climate change can “bring about destruction and chaos to any nation.” https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2020/04/23/2009201/earth-day- address-climate-change-or-face-another-covid-crisis Insight into subject – 4 Organization of ideas- 3 Grammar- - - - - - - -__3_____ 10 points 10 City of Good Character DISCIPLINE GOOD TASTE EXCELLENCE References Almonte, L., et al( 2014).
