Energy Resources Renewable and Nonrenewable Resources A renewable resource can be replenished over fairly short time spans on a human time scale Energy from flowing water, wind, and the sun are also renewable resources A nonrenewable resource takes millions of years to form and accumulate When the present supply of nonrenewable resources run out, there won’t be any more Common examples are coal, oil, natural gas, uranium and others FOSSIL FUELS Fossil Fuels Fossil Fuel – a non-renewable energy resource, the general term for any hydrocarbon that may be used for fuel COAL Black combustible rock made up of element carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and varying amounts of sulfur. COAL PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS Petroleum (oil) and natural gas form from the remains of plants and animals that were buried in ancient seas PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS Through continuous burial of the organic matter from these aquatic organisms, it transforms into a waxy material called kerogen which eventually will turn ito petroleum and natural gas in the process of catagenesis. PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS Oil window is the specific depth, pressure and temperatur e range where petroleum is formed. PETROLEUM Oil Trap Fossil Fuels and Carbon Cycle Carbon cycle balances out the carbons in the earth. Fossil fuels supposedly does not cycle through the earth. When combusted, these carbons then are fee to cycle the earth, affecting the natural balance of carbon. Other Energy Resources Nuclear energy Geothermal energy Hydroelectric energy Solar energy Wind energy Biomass Other Energy Resources Nuclear energy Geothermal energy Hydroelectric energy Solar energy Wind energy Biomass *how is it processed to produce electricity (powerplants), countries or areas that uses these energy resources, advantage and disadvantage
