Hmm…. You have $3, what are you buying at the gas station? Empathy What is empathy? Empathy Ability to understand and share how someone else is feeling. What is empathy? Empathy & Mental Health Why are we talking about it? Qualities of Empathy 1. Perspective Taking: Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes 2. Staying out of judgement 3. Recognizing emotions and understanding them 4. Communicating Let’s Take a Survey! - Do this on a piece of scratch paper 1 - Not at all 2 - A little 3 - Some of the time (about 1/2 and 1/2) 4 - Most of the time 5 - Almost all of the time 1. I feel empathy for people who are less fortunate than me. 2. I find it easy to understand other people’s points of view. 3. I am greatly upset by other people’s hardships and misfortunes. (like a house fire, or parents divorce). 4. If someone needed help in an emergency, I would willingly offer it. (like an asthma attack, or unconscious) 5. There are 2 sides to every story, I remember this fact & try to look at both sides 1 - Not at all 2 - A little 3 - Some of the time (about 1/2 and 1/2) 4 - Most of the time 5 - Almost all of the time 6. I would give money to people in need even if I did not know them well. (like in a disaster, give donation) 7. If I saw a neighbor had a need, I would offer to help without being asked. (like if their groceries were spilling) 8. I would let an elderly or disabled person go ahead of me in line even if I was in a hurry. 9. I would try and stop a friend from hurting someone, even if the person they wanted to hurt was not our friend. 10. When I make decisions I try and think of the rights of everyone involved. Empathy Survey Results: 10 - 30: You are not practicing empathetic behaviors You are reluctant or hesitant to help others You need to work on your empathy skills! 31 - 40: You are average in your empathy :l Empathy might not come naturally You may need to purposely think about it 41 - 50: You are very empathetic! :) Yeh! Keep it up! You never know the difference you might make Empathy is a Choice. The Opposite of Empathy is Selfishness! I would give money to people in need even if I did not know them well. -If you won't give $ to someone in need, who are you probably keeping it for? There are two sides to every story, I remember this fact and try to look at both sides. -If you won't listen to their side, whose are you only hearing? I would let an elderly or disabled person go ahead of me in line even if I was in a hurry. -If you won't let a disable person go ahead of you, who are you worried about getting through the line? You’ve heard it a lot but what does it mean? Do you have any Blind Spots??? Meet Auggie What part of the video stuck out the most to you? What feelings were you experiencing when watching this clip? How does this clip relate to empathy and the quote “Don’t Judge a Book by it’s cover”? We all have things in common if you take the time to get to know someone for who they really are. The Sad Reality…… 1. We assume that someone is different than us 2. Different = weird 3. Weird = inferior 4. And that thinking leads to us to make fun of them, be critical and mean… What do people and icebergs have in common? Problem with Stereotypes: WE BOX PEOPLE IN AND DON’T GET TO KNOW THEM FOR WHO THEY REALLY ARE AND THEY CAN BE VERY HURTFUL! & It Lowers Empathy! Icebergs & People We have more to us than what other people see. There are SO many things that make us who we are than what our physical appearance shows us. What does this statement mean to you? Our Words have POWER…. We label - Stereotype - Make fun of a person - Mean - Think we’re better than them - Bully/harass - Prejudisms – Discrimination - Anger - Hate - VIOLENCE Can you think of a time when you said something hurtful to someone else? Can you think of a time when you laughed at something hurtful that someone else said? Can you think of a time when You Laughed off something hurtful that someone else said to you because you didn’t want them to see your hurt? Stereotyping leads to…… Prejudice is A NEGATIVE, UNREASONABLE OPINION/ATTITUDE or having a problem with people in a certain group, but not actually doing anything to them. Which then leads to…… Discrimination is the ACT of doing something harmful to people in a certain group. Have you ever been so hurt by someone’s words that you permanently changed in some way? Our Words Have POWER !!! We can't control what others say, but we can: -For bad 1. Not say mean words ourselves don't do it 2. Speak up to the mean person -Or good 3. Stand up when we hear it being said to someone. Stand up for someone if you see it. Just because someone is different, does not mean they are any less worthy of R-E-S-P-E-C-T than you! Closing Thoughts: Don’t be so quick to label and judge when we really don't truly know someone. When we truly understand someone's story or what they have been through we are better equipped to not stereotype or have prejudice, and to show EMPATHY! heal Also, embrace your story. Don’t stress what you can’t control and do work at overcoming what you can… Under the Surface Examples
