1. Line 2. Shape 3. Form 4. Color 5. Texture 6. Space 7. Value 8. Size The first and most basic element of design is that of the line. In drawing, a line is the stroke of the pen or pencil but in graphic design, it’s any two connected points. Lines are useful for dividing space and drawing the eye to a specific location. They are most of the time used for delimitation between different sections of a design, or are used to direct a viewer’s vision in a specific direction. The lines can create different effects and visual impact. While a thick, bold line draws attention because of its visual power, the thin lines tend to go the other way. The color has an impact too, dark colors are easier to see and draw more attention than light or pale colors. Shapes, geometric or organic, add interest. Shapes are defined by boundaries, such as a lines or color, and they are often used to emphasize a portion of the page. An element of art that is three-dimensional and encloses volume; includes height, width AND depth (as in a cube, a sphere, a pyramid, or a cylinder). Form may also be free flowing. Color is one of the most obvious elements of design, for both the user and the designer. It can stand alone, as a background, or be applied to other elements, like lines, shapes, textures or typography. An element of art that refers to the way things feel, or look as if they might feel if touched. The lightness or darkness of tones or colors. White is the lightest value; black is the darkest. The value halfway between these extremes is called middle gray. Size is simply the relationship of the area occupied by one shape to that of another. Space can be defined as positive or negative. Positive space is the filled space, the object(s) or element(s) in thedesign. Negative space is the empty space, or the open space between design elements or objects, such as a background.
