ECE 1201 – Curriculum Planning I Test # 1: Note Review 1. The week of January 6th a. Text Reference: Pages 62, 421 -422. b. Emergent-Inquiry Based Curriculum (PowerPoint) Foundations of the emergent or inquiry based curriculum is based upon reggio emilia based primary on the interests and passions of children interests of educators and parents may also be included the process begins with the observations of the educator of children's interests during play, routines and planned experiences the topics selected to explore are the educator's responsibility The process: ○ an educator sees an interest emerge; they brainstorm ways to study the topic that would further engage children's interest ○ the brainstorming process is generally referred to as webbing ○ this creative process allows educators to think of as many ways as possible to allow children to play with and learn about the topic The importance of play ○ play influences neural pathways in children's brains ○ play advances the development of thinking skills, problem-solving and language expression ○ research also demonstrates that play-based learning leads to greater social, emotional, and academic success ECE 1201 – Curriculum Planning I Test # 1: Note Review ○ based on such evidence, ministers of education endorse a sustainable pedagogy for the future that does not separate play from learning but brings them together to promote creativity in future generations ○ play is so essential to healthy development that the United Nations has recognized it as a specific right for all children ○ remember, as an early childhood educator, we are obligated to provide children with opportunities to play. adult directed The use of open-ended materials ○ open-ended materials are things that children can use in a variety of ways ○ there is no wrong way to use open-ended materials. The use of the material is based on the child's interest, perception and experience ○ open-ended materials are about the process of exploration and can inspire creativity ○ while children may use open-ended materials to create some type of product (such as a painting), these products would all look different and reflect their individual ideas and exploration ○ some examples of open-ended materials are sand water blocks play dough paint, etc ECE 1201 – Curriculum Planning I Test # 1: Note Review ○ open ended materials are also known as loose parts natural materials found materials The environment- the 3rd teacher ○ open and inviting spaces that connect with one another, as well as with the outside community ○ natural furnishings encourage real-life interactions think; plants, mirrors, big windows, natural light and less of what we come to expect in a traditional early learning and care facility ○ The presentation of classroom materials and resources draws attention and curiosity without feeling institutional. ○ The display of project work, both completed and in-progress, surrounds the environment, to spark new creative ideas and engage students. ○ The design and layout of workspaces support opportunities for small and large group activities and or independent work. The educator- porvocateur ○ Educators model how to add to and extend on ideas proposed during observations. ○ Educators also model how to question and how to carry out an investigation (invitation or provocation). ECE 1201 – Curriculum Planning I Test # 1: Note Review ○ The educator is the “provocateur” (some who provokes ideas/thoughts). This is done by finding ways to introduce children to ideas/subjects that are meaningful to them. ○ The educator sets the tone of the environment by providing opportunities for children to share ideas and investigations. ○ The sharing of ideas assists children to understand their own ideas, approaches, questions and problems. The use of inquiry process to support learning ○ Exploration and experimentation support the processes of inquiry. ○ Children use all their senses to gain information. ○ Educators support children’s discoveries with supportive comments and the use of open-ended questions to foster further learning. ○ The inquiry Process is used to support the process. 2.
