Alexa Karsel, Lexi Reger, Ashley Wolford Learning Objectives What is an eating disorder & the different types Signs and symptoms to look for in people with eating disorders What are Eating Disorders? ❑ Behavioral conditions characterized by severe/persistent disturbance in eating behaviors ❑ Distressing thoughts & emotions ❑ Affects both mental and physical health ❑ Development of an unhealthy relationship with food Signs and Symptoms Fatigue Hair loss Fainting/dizziness Mood swings Unexplained weight changes & rapid weight loss Binging & purging food Abnormal excessive exercise Anorexia Nervosa Severe restricted calorie intake, intense fear of gaining weight Types of Eating Bulimia Nervosa Eating large amounts in short time period, usually followed by purging Disorders Binge eating disorder Large amounts of food followed by shame/guilt Pica Eating things that are not considered food (ice, dirt, chalk, soap, paper, etc.) Rumination disorder Routinely regurgitating food they have previously swallowed, re- chewing it, then either re-swallows it or spits it out Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder Lack of interest in eating or a distaste for certain things, this prevents person from eating enough calories Diagnosis and Test - Blood work (CBC) - Physical examination - Dental exam Management / Treatment - Psychotherapy - Rehabilitation Centers - Nutrition Counseling - Medications Prevention There’s no known way to entirely prevent eating disorders Awareness and education Getting treatment for general health conditions and mental health conditions (like depression, anxiety and obsessive- compulsive disorder) at the first sign of symptoms If eating disorders run in the family: o Be a positive role model o Eat healthy foods and avoid talking about food as “good” or “bad" o Avoid talking about “dieting” with children o Avoid making negative comments about bodies Reach Out to Help If you notice a family member or friend who seems to show signs of an eating disorder, consider talking to that person about your concern for their well-being. You may not be able to prevent an eating disorder from developing, but reaching out with compassion may encourage the person to seek treatment It’s helpful to detect an eating disorder early and start treatment right away for the best outlook Recovery takes time and you may need lifelong support Untreated eating disorders can be life-threatening.
