An academic text is a written language that provides information,which contain ideas and concepts that are related to the particular discipline. Characteristics of an Academic Text Structure -follows a basic structure that is formal and logical to have a clear structure and logical flow. Tone -the attitude conveyed in a piece of writing. -arguments are presented fairly and in a narrative tone. Language -the language used in academic text should be: -unambiguous -formal -third person point of view Citation -acknowldeging the source of any ideas,research findings,data or quoted text that have been used in a paper. Complexity -addresses complex issues that require higher-order thinking skills to comprehend. -connect ideas and show relationships through explaining,showing and proving. Evidence-Based -use reasons and evidence to support a claim. -the use of text,data,facts statistics,findings,expert opinion,anecdotes,,or examples. Thesis-Driven -a particular perspective,idea or position applied to the chosen research problem. Features of Academic Texts 1. Complex -use longer words,wider vocabulary and more complicated grammar. -In academic text,we expound ideas,justify explanations and support claims with facts and evidence. 2. Formal -academic text uses formal language. -In academic text, we avoid colloquial and slang expressions. -avoid “chatty” language. 3. Precise -information are given accurately and precisely. -In academic text,there are systematic investigation,comprehensive examination of data and citation of references. 4. Objective -presents and evaluates issues and arrives at an objective position. -In academic text,we focus on research and reasoning rather than personal feelings and opinions. -avoid unbiased claims and subjective judgement of the writer. 5. Academic and Social Language Academic language is the language needed by students to do the work in schools. Social Language is the set of vocabulary that allow us to communicate with others in the context of regular daily conversations.
