SOCIAL DANCES and DANCE MIXERS Social dance- is a major category or classification of dance forms or dance styles, where sociability and socializing are the primary focuses of the dancing. BALLROOM DANCE- the term 'ballroom dancing' is derived from the Latin word ballare which means 'to dance' (a ball-room being a large room specially designed for such dances). DanceSport -is the activity that combines sport and dance, and that allows the participants to improve physical fitness and mental well-being, to form social relationships and to obtain results in competition at all levels. Originally for four couples in square formation Dance etiquette- is a set of guidelines that help us navigate the social dimensions of dancing. 1. What to Wear ATTIRE GENTLEMEN LADIES Tailcoat,Tuxedo Coat, Regular Ball Gown, Evening Gown, Formal Coat, Bow Tie or Regular Dinner Gown, Cocktail Gown Necktie, Black Trouser Dress Shirt and Tie, Vest or Dinner Dresses, Semi- Sweater that shows the Formal Tie Flowing Pants Dressy Casual ( Solid Color T-shirts, Anything that displays a Practices, Dance turtleneck, Polo Shirt, conservative, toned- Lessons Cotton Slacks down appearance Button-up shirt, Solid T-shirt, Sexy outfits and Long Slit skirts, Latin Turtleneck, Dress Slacks, Bright Low necklines and Exposed Colorful outfits are Accepted midriffs are popular Formal Attire Tuxedo Coat Regular Coat Bow Tie Ball Gown Cocktail Gown Semi- Formal Dress shirt and Tie Vest or Sweater Dinner Dresses Flowing Pants Dressy Casual ( Practices, Dance Lessons) Turtleneck Polo Shirt Latin Attire 2. Dont’s in terms of Outfits and Dance shoes - Donot wear sneaker or any shoes with rubber or spongy sole. They can stick to the dance floor during turns and spins that any cause knee and ankle injuries. Avoid sleeveless shirts and strapped dresses. It’s not pleasant to have your partner touch your damp skin. - Avoid shaggy, baggy, low armpit upper shirt. Partner’s hand may get caught in the baggy sleeves. Avoid accessories like big rings, watches, and big belt buckles. Long hair should be put up or tied in a pony tail. 3. On the dance floor *Line of Direction ( Counter clockwise) *While on the floor( avoid colliding with other pairs) *Be polite ( thank or compliment your partner) 4. Accompany your partner back to her seat. 4. No-Fault Dancing - Never blame a partner for missed execution of figures - Dance to the level of your partner - The show must go on, say “sorry” to your partner if something went wrong 5. Demeanor - Be personable, smile and make eye contact with partner. - Project a positive image on the dance floor even if it’s not your personal style. - Dance at the level of your partner. -If you don’t know the dance, be honest, refuse promptly if asked to dance. -No teaching on the dance floor. It may insult your partner. -Do not cut other dancers off. The Fitness Side of Social Dance Sedentary Lifestyle- is a mode of living in which a person DOES NOT engage in sufficient physical activity. Negative impacts on a person’s life due to living a sedentary lifestyle. Health Effects 1. Increased Weight Gain and Obesity 2. Heart diseases 3. Diabetes 4. Certain Types of cancer Chart on Philippine Food Pyramid Cha – cha – cha Cha Cha originated in Cuba and evolved from a slow version of Mambo called “Triple Mambo” or Mambo with guiro rhythm. Enrique Jorrin - a Cuban Violinist created the first cha cha song in 1948. Cha Cha was introduced to the US in 1954 which replaced mambo as the latest dance craze. Dance Characteristics Cha Cha is a lively, fun, cheeky and playful dance.
