Living Things and Cells 03/01/2024 Learning Outcomes: 1. Investigate the difference the difference between living things and non-living things. Classify living things into diverse groups Investigate the structures of animal and plant cells and their functions. Use a microscope to see the structure of animal cells. What are living things? There is no straightforward way to tell the difference between living and none living things, but they must have all the characteristics shown below CHARACTERISTICS MEANING ----------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cells The basic building blocks of living things. Nutrition The way which living things get their food. Excretion The way in which living things get rid of their waste that they produce. Response The way in which living things react to changes in their surroundings. Reproduction The way in which living things produce living things. GROUPS OF LIVING THINGS EXAMPLES ------------------------- --------------------------------- Bacteria Tiny microscopic living things. Fungi Mushrooms, moulds and yeast. Plants Trees, grasses and flowers. Animals Humans, fish and insects. Others Seaweeds and amoeba. Vertebrates- Animals that have backbones. Invertebrates- Animals that do not have a backbone. VERTEBRATES INVERTEBRATES ------------- --------------- Horse Spider Seagull Earthworms Frog Fly Snake Jellyfish CELLS Living things are made of cells. Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things. Animal Cells Animal Cells have three main parts:\ Membrane- to hold the cell contents in place and control what passes through it. Nucleus- Acts as the control centre of the cell. Cytoplasm- Carries out cell reactions and support tiny cell structures. Plant Cells Plant Cells have five main parts: Cell Wall- Gives strength to the plant cell. Cell Membrane- Holds the cell contents in place and controls what passes through the cell. Nucleus- It is to act as the control centre of the cell. Cytoplasm- It carries out some cell reactions and to support tiny cell structures. However, plant cytoplasm\'s may have tiny green structures known as chloroplasts, which allow plants to make its own food. This is known as photosynthesis. Vacuole- To give strength to the cell. ![](media/image2.png) \+
