AURORA POLICE DEPARTMENT DIRECTIVES MANUAL 04.07 Title: RIOT EQUIPMENT Approved By: Nick Metz, Chief of Police Effective: 03/22/2001 Revised: 02/02/2016 Associated Policy: References: Review: Equipment and Facilities Section Command Officer 4.7 Page 1 of 1 RIOT EQUIPMENT All sworn members will be issued riot equipment to include a helmet with face shield, a 42-inch "long baton" and a gas mask with approved filter(s). 4.7.1 Equipment Members will maintain their issued riot equipment and ensure it is always in proper working order, i.e., gas mask filter and face plate, helmet and face shield, etc. Members will have their riot equipment immediately available during their duty hours. Uniformed members, including Patrol, SWAT, PAR, GIU and Traffic officers will carry their issued riot equipment in their assigned vehicle during their tour of duty. Exceptions will be made for those members riding motorcycles or bicycles during their tour of duty. 4.7.2 Deployment Riot equipment will be deployed when deemed necessary to protect members in situations such as civil unrest or in gas environments. The decision to deploy riot equipment will be made by a scene supervisor or command officer. Situations, which may call for deployment of riot equipment, include: a) b) c) d) Riots Demonstrations Looting Clearing large numbers of people out of venues such as hotel parties, raves, parks, etc. e) Other as deemed necessary by supervisors. Only officers fully equipped with issued riot equipment will be utilized to assist in an event where riot equipment is deployed.
