# Change of Name and First Names **7.1.1.4. Changement de nom et de prénoms** Changing a name involves officially changing a person's first name or last name. Generally, a name is unchangeable. Name changes are only permitted in exceptional circumstances. **A) Request for Modification for a Major** Any Luxembourgish adult who wishes to change their name or first name can submit a written request to the Ministry of Justice. This request must include serious and sufficiently compelling reasons to justify the name change. **Name Change:** * Having a ridiculous or derogatory name. * Having an unfamiliar name that is difficult to pronounce. * In the event of a sex change (for the first name). **7.1.2. Residence (Domicile)** A person's residence is considered the place of their main establishment, where their most important interests and activities are centered. **Residence and Rights/Obligations:** * Acts such as marriage take place at the person's residence. * The competent court in the event of a conflict is usually determined by the defendant's residence. * The right to vote is exercised in the municipality where the person resides. Minors are legally considered to reside with their parents.
