Business capability Any of the above But we can classify Risk Lifecycle Organization projects according to six High Waterfall In-house Medium Agile Single Vendor dimensions. Low Multiple Vendors Outsource Off-shore IT PROJECT MANAGEMENT University of Baguio - SIT WHAT DO ALL PROJECTS HAVE IN COMMON A project is a distinct, non-repetitive activity that has several features: There is a project goal to be achieved, often in the form of output/deliverables There is a scope that establishes what the project includes but also excludes There is a timeframe for when the project should be completed There are (limited) resources available. (e.g budget, people, etc) There is a level of risk that needs to be managed along the way. IT PROJECT MANAGEMENT University of Baguio - SIT ESSENTIAL CONCEPTS IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIVWaUgqEAc IT PROJECT MANAGEMENT University of Baguio - SIT ESSENTIAL CONCEPTS IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT Key concepts: Project Goal Deliverables Plan Timelines / Milestones Project risks Constraints Project Team Project Sponsor Support IT PROJECT MANAGEMENT University of Baguio - SIT ESSENTIAL CONCEPTS IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT The Project Management Book Of Knowledge (PMBOK) defines project management as follows: “The application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities in order to meet stakeholder’s needs and expectations from a project” Note the emphasis on meeting needs and expectations. So how do we deal with clients that have unrealistic expectations? IT PROJECT MANAGEMENT University of Baguio - SIT ESSENTIAL CONCEPTS IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT PMBOK defines 9 knowledge areas for all projects (not specific to IT projects) 1. Project integration-planning, execution, control 2. Time management 3. Quality management 4. Scope management 5. Cost management 6. Human resource management 7. Communications management 8. Procurement management 9. Risk management IT PROJECT MANAGEMENT University of Baguio - SIT ESSENTIAL CONCEPTS IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT Paul Coby, former CIO of John Lewis and British Airways: “There is no such thing as an IT Project, there are only business projects” What do you think? Some argue that the concept of an “IT Project” is a misnomer because IT Projects always serve a business objective. IT PROJECT MANAGEMENT University of Baguio - SIT SUCCESS DEFINED AS TRIPLE CONSTRAINT This is where project success (or quality) = on- time + on-budget + on-scope Note that time, cost and scope are all inter-related. Changing one will affect the others. So project quality is affected when, for example, there is a change in scope without a commensurate change in time and cost (budget). IT PROJECT MANAGEMENT University of Baguio - SIT 3 KINDS OF PROJECT OUTCOMES Successful projects: are those completed on- time, on-budget and meet the required scope. Challenged: Completed, but may have exceeded the budget, delivered late or not have fully met the required scope. Failed: Project is cancelled before completion Standish Group Chaos Report suggest project success rates have increased over time, but failure rates remain high, with almost 1 in 5 projects failing. IT PROJECT MANAGEMENT University of Baguio - SIT PROJECT TRADE-OFFS Customers always want projects which are good, cheap and fast! The reality, only two of the above is possible. It is important that customer and stakeholder expectations are managed!
