**DESCRIPTION AS A TOOL OF WRITING** - a from of writing whose aim is to convey factual information giving specific identifying elements of an object, place, condition or situation underscoring its physical as well as subjective characteristics. - description is done to help the readers visualize what is being described. Visualization helps a lot in understanding and appreciating what is being read. - writers employ words that will help the readers imagine what is being depicted. **HOW TO WRITE AN EFFECTIVE DESCRIPTION?** - Choose a familiar subject to describe and study it carefully. A familiar subject which may be an object, a person or a place is easier to work with than with an unfamiliar one. It is also easier to explore its elements which might be interesting and relevant. - Train your observation toward the concrete, clear-cut details of the image being described and not to an overall hazy impression of it. - List down as many adjectives and adverbs (words and phrases) that will effectively illustrate it. List words that will bring out its physical characteristics (color, size. textue, length, width, etc.) and words that will characterize it subjectively. Use abstract and general words. **REMINDER** - Write your description in simple and easily understood language without sounding dull and uninteresting. - Describing a person - Describing an object - Describing a place **WRITING NARRATION** - a form of discourse thattells a story factually or imaginatively. The **imagine narrative** is a creation of the writer's mind. He invents his own plot and makes his own character, giving the illusion of reality. - description is indispensable in narration. there can be description without narration, yet, there can't be a narration without description. - Narration can be made more effective and appealing when instead of simply narrating the events as they happen, the thoughts feelings, as well as the reactions of the writer are vividly detailed. **ELEMENTS OF A GOOD NARRATIVE** - A sense of movement - A sense of reality and truth - A careful and significant ordering of details - A well-defined point of view - Often, narration answers the questions: "What happened?" and "How did it happen?" - Narration follows thee (3) methods of time sequence: **chronological, logical and the combination of two.** **CHRONOLOGICAL** - also called the ABC order, that is, from first to last. - the writer centers his attention to writing of events, incidents or order, presenting the details of event in order of their occurence. - example: *Biography, History, Procedural manuals, and etc.* **LOGICAL** - opposite of the chronological employed chiefly in detective and mystery stories and uses the deductive or inductive method of presentation.
