Cultural Assessment Issues By Dr. Fatma Khalil At the end of this session the student will be able to: ▪ List Steps to be followed during culture assessment. ▪ Mention Strategies for working with patients in cross- cultural settings. ▪ Identify the Importance of doing a culture assessment Cultural Assessment Five areas to be examined in assessing one’s own culture and the influence it may have on personal beliefs about health care are: 1. Influences from own ethnic/racial background (tie one to an ethnic group ex. skin color, religion, language). 2. Typical verbal and non-communication patterns. 3. Cultural values and norms. 4. Religious beliefs and practices. 5. Health beliefs and practices. Client Cultural Assessment Six categories of information necessary for a comprehensive cultural assessment of a client are: 1. Ethnic or racial background. 2. Language and communication patterns. 3. Cultural values and norms. 4. Biocultural factors. 5. Religious beliefs and practices. 6. Health beliefs and practices. Culturally Appropriate Care Respect clients for their different beliefs. Be sensitive to behaviors and practices different from your own. Accommodate differences if they are not detrimental to health. Listen for cues in the client’s conversation that relay a unique ethnic belief about etiology, transmission, prevention, etc. Teach positive health habits if the client’s practices are deleterious to good health. Ethnocentrism Is the belief that one’s own cultural practices and values are inherently correct or superior to those of others? Ethnocentric attitudes can lead to the following problems 1-Prejudice - Negative preconceived opinions about - Other people or groups based on hearsay, perception, or emotion 2-Stereotyping Believing that one member of a cultural group will display certain behaviors or hold certain attitudes (usually negative) simply because he or she is a member of that cultural group 3-Discrimination—Differential treatment based on race, class, sex, or other variables rather than on individual merit 4-Stigmatization—the attribution of negative characteristics or identity to one person or group, causing the person or group to feel rejected and, alienated, from society Strategies for Working With Patients In Cross-Cultural Settings Learn about the cultural traditions of the patients you care for. Strategies for Working With Patients In Cross-Cultural Settings Pay close attention to body language, lack of response, or expressions of anxiety that may signal that the patient or family is in conflict but perhaps hesitant to tell you. Strategies for Working With Patients In Cross-Cultural Settings Ask the patient and family open- ended questions to gain more information about their assumptions and expectations. Strategies for Working With Patients In Cross- Cultural Settings ❑Follow the advice given by patients about appropriate ways to facilitate communication within families and between families and other health care providers. Importance of doing culture assessment ❑Help the patient and health care provider to formulate a mutually acceptable culturally responsive treatment plan. ❑The patient has the right to their cultural beliefs, Values, and health practices. ❑Defining the meaning of illness in terms of the patient`s unique culture.
