Global Food Security Alexandra Nicole Nueva and Julie Anne Corpus OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson the student should be able to: define global food security and its importance Global Food Security ensuring every nation has the ability to feed its population adequate amounts of nutritional foods. 4 MAIN DIMENSIONS 1. AVAILABILITY OF FOOD 2. ACCESS SECURITY 3. UTILIZATION 4. STABILITY 4 MAIN DIMENSIONS OF FOOD SECURITY Food availability addresses supply side of the food security and expects sufficient quantities of quality food from domestic agriculture production or import. 4 MAIN DIMENSIONS OF FOOD SECURITY Food accessibility refers to the access by individuals to adequate resources for acquiring appropriate foods for nutritious diet. Economic access- refers to factors such as income, poverty and other indicators of buying capacity. Physical access- indicators are related to infrastructure and facilities that hasten the access to food. 4 MAIN DIMENSIONS OF FOOD SECURITY Food utilization is commonly understood as the way the body makes the most of various nutrients in the food. Sufficient energy and nutrient intake by individuals are the result of good care and feeding practices, food preparation, diversity of the diet and intra-household distribution of food. Combined with good biological utilization of food consumed, this determines the nutritional status of individuals. 4 MAIN DIMENSIONS OF FOOD SECURITY Food availability can be defined as the availability of food over time. This concept is linked to another concept, food security, because the latter is considered a measure of access to food population. Food Security in the World Today The global food security situation and outlook remains delicately imbalanced amid surplus food production and the prevalence of hunger, due to the complex interplay of social, economical, and ecological factors that mediate food security outcomes at various human and institutional scales. Transitory food insecurity is a temporary or short-term problem. It happens when there is a cyclical pattern of insufficient access to food, as a sudden drop in the availability of produce or access to enough food in order to maintain good nutritional status. 3 TYPES OF FOOD INSECURITY Seasonal food insecurity it occurs when there is a cyclical pattern of inadequate availability and access to food.
