CREAKY VOICE I have this fry, and I think it\'s really brilliant. Fry. Fry. Brilliant. Brilliant. Did you hear that? That thing where her voice got low and scratchy? That\'s called vocal fry. Listen again. I have this Fry. Fry. Fry. This vocal habit got some media attention in 2015. Okay, hear the way their voice kind of creaks on the word pipeline? That\'s vocal fry. Pipeline. People tend to notice it in women, and judge them unfavourably for it. In our Women in the Workplace series, we\'re looking at some of the challenges women face on the job, so we decide to get to the bottom of vocal fry. What is it? Why do people do it? Why are women catching flack for it? We asked a linguist to explain. Linguists use the term creaky phonation. So when somebody is using creaky phonation, they\'re changing the nature of their vocal folds. So normally we have a, sort of a fluid opening and closing that has about an equal amount of time that it\'s closed versus when it\'s opened. But during vocal fry, or creaky phonation, it\'s closed for longer than it is open. And this gives rise to this low pitched, raspy quality that people have identified as creaky phonation. It may be something that is occurring as part of normal language change. The younger generation is always at the forefront of language change. If you talk about my dad, I will cut you. Cut you. But here\'s the thing. Vocal fry isn\'t something only women do. My name is Rafael Esquer and I\'ve been told that I have vocal fry. Fry. I did this study looking at how people perceive creaky voice. People are actually really good at identifying creaky voice and it doesn\'t matter if it\'s men or women. I\'m not learning new things. These findings suggest that people are negatively evaluating women\'s speech. Even though they can hear it in male speech, they\'re negatively evaluating it only in women\'s speech. It is the voice, it is the appearance, it is the A lot of things, I think, just in general, in the professional situation. I see that females are more criticized. Why is it that the focus of the content of what I\'m seeing is not more important than how I look and everything? This is how we are. We\'re all individuals. We all have our own voice.
