According to Ramon Orlina, a famous glass sculptor, art is | | forming life on a material and making inanimate objects to have life. | | Simply, to create art is to give life. | | | | **What Is Contemporary?** | | | | The word contemporary was borrowed from the Latin word contemporariés | | means existing at the same period of time. It also presents the | | current times. | | | | **What Is Contemporary Art?** | | | | Contemporary arts are unlike the arts from the modern period wherein | | artist's masterpiece was always seen inside the museum. Art in | | contemporary period can be found anywhere as artists find every | | living space as their medium towards creating their art. Moreover, | | different shapes and forms have emerged more than ever in infinite | | ways to express artist's perspective on some issues at current times | | | | **PHILIPPINE HISTORY OF ART DEVELOPMENT** | | | | Before contemporary arts exist, there are several moments that | | happened in Philippine arts. Visual Arts-** these are forms that can be seen by our naked | | eyes. Painting, sculpture and architecture is considered as an | | example of visual arts. This is also called as spatial art. | | | | **2. Audio- Visual Arts** -- these are the arts that can be perceived | | by both ears (audio) and eyes (video). It is also known as performing | | arts. Example of this are music (vocal, instrumental, and mixed), | | dance (ethnologic, social and theatrical ), and drama tragedy, | | comedy, tragicomedy, farce, melodrama, etc. ) | | | | **3. Literary Arts** -- are those created in the written mode that is | | meant to be read by the readers. Examples: Prose ( short stories, | | novels, essays, and plays ) and poetry narrative poems, and dramatic | | poems ) | | | | **[CHARACTERISTICS OF PHILIPPINE CONTEMPORARY ARTS ]** | | | | **1. Dominant/ Mainstream -** Foreign influenced, industry- driven, | | technology assisted, oriented for mass consumption. Example: Kawayan | | De Guia- Kawayan's art contemplates the Philippines' changing urban | | culture. He illogically arranges texts and icons to compose a | | painting, depicting the human form in new ways. His work draws from | | popular culture, the media and mass consumerism. His bomba series | | (massive art installations and sculptures) can be an example of | | contemporary art that possess mainstream characteristic. | | | | **2. Alternative** - Usually social realist and/or advocacy oriented | | individuals. Examples: Pablo Baen Santos- he is considered as one of | | provocateurs of social realism. Al Manrique- his works are methapors | | of the struggle of the workers and the urban poor. | | | | **3. Traditional/ Indigenous** - Preserves local traditions. | | Examples: People of the Philippine Cordillera Photographs 1934-1956 | | published in 1988. Photographs capture the culture of the people in | | Baguio community and serve as a documentation of their customary | | practices and rituals. | | | | **PHILIPPINE POPULAR ART** | | | | Popular art is the art that consumes by general or common Filipino | | people. This is the art that we usually see around us like the most | | awaiting top 10 hit musics, movies, telenovelas, etc. The latest | | trends in these arts are usually dictated by the people who consume | | it, more people who likes it, the more it becomes a trend. | | | | 1\. Literature: Works like Mars Ravelo's Dyesebel, Darna and Captain | | Barbell are some of the examples of our beloved komiks. Komiks is | | widespread and popular throughout the country from the 1920s to the | | present. As the generations pass, stories in komiks have been | | adapted in most of televisions and films. Nowadays, komiks mostly | | read in editorial page of newspapers. Pugad baboy is the most | | popular komiks series that mostly enjoyed by every Filipino of | | every age, size and status who loves comedy. Aside from komiks, | | paperbacks edition of novels or pocketbook romance novels have also | | captured Filipino's heart in literature. And the newest form of | | literature among all is wattpadd, a platform for written novels, | | stories written by people who aspires to be a writer and not only | | by established artists. This has become a trend in Philippine | | literature that it was also adapted into films and tv series such | | as she's dating the gangster, diary ng panget and talk back you're | | dead. | | | | 2\. Music: From our traditional harana, Philippine music has evolved | | into different genre like reggae, rnb, etc. Although, Philippine | | music, was affected by western music influence, still enjoy | | original Pinoy music from Filipino musicians and composers like | | Ogie Alcasid,Ben Cayabyab, Jose Marichan and more new music artists | | creating their name in the industry. Nowadays, Filipino enjoys | | mixed genre music by young Filipino artists whose music became | | sensations in the country via youtube or online platforms like | | recent hits Catriona, Marikit, Dalaga made with electronic | | instruments mostly by auto-tunes unlike the conventional musical | | instruments that was known by many. | | | | 3\. Dance: Philippine dance has played an important role in Filipino | | culture. From the oldest dances or known as folk dances like | | tinikling,pandanggo, carinosa and subli until it evolved into | | daring, carefree dance steps like hiphop which are influenced by | | western culture, it cannot be denied that Philippine dance is | | embedded into our culture and continuously merging into society's | | development. As the year goes by, Filipino popularize different | | dance steps from foreign countries like Macarena, Gangnam style | | which was humorously tagged as country's national dance but there | | were also original pinoy dance steps were created by Filipino | | dancers like sexbomb with their spaghetti dance and even artists | | who are good in Philippine entertainment like Bayani Agbayani with | | his otso-otso. There were also some Filipino dance groups who | | bravely showcase their dance talents internationally and became | | famous like Jabbawockeez, El Gamma Penumbra and Philippine All | | Stars Dance Crew. | | | | 4\. Movies: Nowadays, Filipino films or movies are greatly compared | | to western or foreign movies in terms of its content, cgi effects, | | production, actors, actresses and such. No wonder, most of our | | movies are adaptions of American and mostly our neighbour country | | Korea. Filipino staples featuring romantic comedy series with | | patterned stories. Additionally, slapstick comedies of Vic Sotto, | | Vice Ganda, Paolo Ballesteros and rising comedian stars still make | | the movie-goers laugh and patronize it specially every December. | | There were also horror movies like the unending shake, rattle and | | roll that makes the audience have their goose bumps and be | | entertained. | | | | **TECHNIQUES AND STYLES IN THE ART- MAKING PROCESS** | | | | 1\. **Collage**: Is a technique in art, commonly used in visual | | arts, where the artwork is being made from the separated elements | | in order to form a whole another artwork. | | | | 2\. **Frottage**: technique in visual arts where a textural effect | | is achieved on a flat surface by rubbing lead, chalk, etc. | | | | 3\. **Decalcomania**: technique in art wherein artist paints using | | opaque colours to a paper or glass then transferring the image or | | painting's reverse into any flat surface. | | | | 4\. **Decoupage**: technique of decorating an art by attaching cut | | outs to the craft or artworks. | | | | 5\. **Graffiti**: a style in art wherein artists use public walls or | | big blank walls to paint. Graffiti usually aim to express political | | or social messages. | | | | 6\. **Montage**: technique where artist select different portions of | | a film and edit it to make a whole new continuous video. This is | | usually applied in order to condense space, time and information. | | | | 7\. **Trapunto**: This word originates from an Italian word which | | means "to quilt".This is a technique where two layers of quilt is | | used to create a raised surface over the whole quilt. | | | | 8\. **Digital Application:** A technique in exhibiting art | | | | **SUBJECT MATTER AND STYLES IN THE PHILIPPINE CONTEMPORARY ARTS | | SCENE** | | | | Subject matter contemporary art can be human figure, landscapes and | | anything that interest a contemporary artist. Unlike traditional | | artists, contemporary artists are limitless in using subject matters. | | On the other hand, styles use in contemporary art is boundless as the | | subject matters used but it can be categorized in some of the biggest | | movement in art. There are the following: | | | | 1\. **conceptual art**: Used by artist in their masterpiece that | | solicits judgements and unravelling of messages from their audience | | and critics. | | | | 2\. **Abstract Expressionism:** Style in painting where the abstract | | expressionist strokes of brushes and application of paints is the | | result of the spur of the moment that expresses his emotions. | | Figures in a painting of abstract expressionism are observed to | | have heavy lines and pale colours. | | | | 3\. **Kinetic Art:** Is a style in art where the artist use motions | | in order to give their intended effect. This is usually done with | | the sculpture. | | | | 4\. **OP Art:** Is a style in visual arts where artist create moving | | like figures using repeated shapes, lines or colors. | | | | 5\. **Performance Art:** Is a style of art where a masterpiece is | | presented while the artist is at the present moment of creating it | | or the performance is the art itself. It may be live, through | | documentation, spontaneously or written | | | | 6\. **Environment Art:** It is a style in art where artists make use | | of everything that is found in environment that usually aims to | | make statements about environmental issues. | | | | 7\. **Minimalism:** Is a style in visual arts where artist use only | | the essentials or important features of the subject matter. | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
