ART is the expression or application of human creative skills and imagination, producing works and to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power, in the view of the Royal Spanish Academy, art is a way for people to show their unique perspective on the world. This can be done through any creative medium, like sculpting, writing, or music. Artists use their skills and imagination to bring their ideas to life, whether they're based on reality, or something entirely made up. This drive for creative expression has been around since the very beginning of humanity. Art has always served as a tool for people to express their feelings, emotions, and how they see the world Art lovers might get confused by the terms "modern" and "contemporary." Even though they sound similar, they refer to different eras in art history. Let's explore what sets them apart and what they have in common. Modern vs. Contemporary Art: A Quick Look Modern Art (1880s-1970s): This period brought us new styles like Fauvism, Impressionism, and Surrealism. Artists experimented with new techniques like screen printing and collage. Think of famous names like Picasso, Dalí, Van Gogh, and Kahlo. The Modern Art era spans from the late 19th and early 20th century, from 1880 to the 1960s. In the Philippines, Victorio Edades, Hernando Ocampo and Carlos “Botong” Francisco were the pioneers of this art style, they were called the “Triumvirate of Philippine Modern Art”. Their artworks were influenced by the western styles in the international scene. They rivaled the Neoclassical artist in which Fernando Amorsolo was widely known. Contemporary Art (Present Day): This is art created now, mostly by living artists. It uses all sorts of media, from paintings to video art and even tech-based pieces. Contemporary artists often address current issues like globalization, terrorism, and feminism. Big names in contemporary art include Koons, Ono, Banksy, and Kusama. Contemporary Philippine Arts Contemporary arts in the Philippines encapsulate a vibrant and diverse spectrum of artistic expressions. They reflect the nation’s rich cultural heritage, social issues, and modern-day challenges. Characterized by its dynamic use of various mediums, styles, and themes, Philippine contemporary art transcends traditional boundaries to explore new forms of expression. Accordingly, this period of art is particularly marked by its engagement with current events, technology, and globalization. Dr. Patrick Flores, renowned art critic and Metropolitan Museum curator, characterizes Contemporary Philippine Arts as "the constantly extending and developing constellation of (Philippine) art." The possibilities of investigating either subject or medium in art to represent the Filipino sense of self are then opened by contemporary Philippine arts. At present, Filipinos are becoming more and more aggressive as they use art to express themselves and create wonderful artworks that showcase the Filipino way of life. Contemporary artists have brought their artworks into the street, in public, because in contemporary times, the main feature of any artwork primarily depends on how the art is able to connect with the spectator. Principles, Elements and Characteristic of Contemporary Art Contemporary art, unlike traditional art, is an active element of society since it depicts and mediates societal situations with human aspirations. Artwork made by today’s artists and had a worldview is sensitive to changing circumstances. Hence, contemporary art is a continual activity that has evolved to the following principles, elements, and characteristics. 1. Changes to Accepted Tradition and Accepted Taste Contemporary art tries to challenge the age-old art techniques and practices that hinder personal growth and development. Traditional techniques to art creation should not limit current artists. Contemporary artists are also not hesitant to make work that contradicts personal views or public opinion. Playing with recognized traditions should be properly thought of and still be respectful to their predecessors. Appropriation - Existing artworks are appropriated to create new artwork. The use of prints, pictures, and icons to create another art form is a typical feature of contemporary art, since it attempts to merge past and present to revive interest in existing forms of art. https://nz.pinterest.com/freybergart/appropriation/ 2. Understanding of a Multiplicity of Viewpoints Contemporary art spans geographical, ethnic, gender, and belief gaps. Contemporary artists are aware of the multifaceted, multicultural aspect of today's global society. Their artworks are no longer oblivious of the complexity of history, politics, and economics. Artists are becoming more aware of the interconnectivity of people and reality, which influences their work. Performance – It has evolved to “emphasize spontaneous, unpredictable elements of chance”. Performing artists have tried to Disclaimer: This module is adapted and modified from the source materials listed in the references list. Issues and Ideas about the Role of Object in Space and Relationships between Objects Contemporary art works with the existing objects or structures to maintain balance and harmony. Space has become a vital part of contemporary artist activity. Contemporary artworks are no longer restricted to museums, galleries, and theaters. Contemporary artists are now considering public venues for the presentation and installation of their artworks. Space – Arts have transformed the concept of space, for today’s artist space is a powerful tool which can be used to express ideas. Site-specific arts, an artform performed and positioned in specific spots especially public spaces are becoming more in-trend. 4. Use of Everyday Materials as Medium With the various environmental concerns affecting our society, contemporary art tries to respond to the need for environmental conservation. Simple things are transformed and brought to life by contemporary art. Contemporary artists are transforming everyday things such as furniture, automobile components, electronics, and kitchen appliances into stunning artworks. Recycled art has grown popular among contemporary artists. The vast array of materials derived from waste allows the artist to express his or her boundless creativity. Hybridity - Contemporary artists are well-known for presenting new art styles to the world. New sorts of art are generated at the same time as unique art mediums are joined and diverse ideas are broadened or blended. Usage of unconventional materials, mixing of unlikely materials to produce an artwork are becoming a common practice. 5. Employment of Contemporary Technology In the process of making an artwork, contemporary art takes advantage of accessible technology. Technology has transformed the way contemporary artists create art. Some art creation processes have grown less laborious. A capable camera phone may now be used by an independent filmmaker to shoot a film. Musicians may now use tablet computers to make music. A sculptor may now utilize computer-guided saws to make accurate cuts in a variety of materials. Writers may now self- publish their creations as electronic books. Technology - Usage of technology in the creation and dissemination of art works. Video and Internet for example has become an indispensable part of human interaction. VIII.
