Physical Education and Health 2 www.ncst.edu.ph The documented history of sports retracted way back 3,000 years ago. In the early days, sports often involved the preparation for war or training as a hunter, which explains why so many early games involved the throwing of spears, stakes, and rocks, and sparring one-on-one with opponents. With the first Olympic Games in 776 BC4, which included events such as foot and chariot races wrestling, jumping, discus and javelin throwing the Ancient Greeks introduced formal sports to the world. The following by no means exhaustive list looks at the beginnings and evolution of some of today's most popular sporting pastimes. It is defined as all forms of physical activity which, through casual or organized participation, aim at expressing or improving physical fitness and mental well-being, forming social relationships, or obtaining results in competitions at all levels. Sport is also a major source of entertainment of non-participants with spectator sport drawing large crowd to sport venues and reaching wider audiences through broadcasting. 2. Sports helps us a lot in maintaining our health as well as our personality. 3. Sports develop an overall aptitude for facing challenges in life. 4. Indoor Games These are games played inside a building or gymnasium are called indoor games. 2. Outdoor Games These are sporting games that are generally played outside in an open area. Physical Education and Health 2 www.ncst.edu.ph Classification of Sports 1. Individual sports Individual sports are sports where only one athlete competes for his/her own side. Many track and field and swimming events are example of individual competitions, where one athlete is solely responsible for winning or losing. Amateur – pertains to proletarian/popular type of sports consisting of one player or more acting as ambassador/s of a place competing in a highly organized game. 2. Professional – a popular type of sports elevated as an entertainment. Physical Education and Health 2 www.ncst.edu.ph Health Related Fitness Components There are five areas of health-related fitness. They are heart and lung endurance or cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. 1. Heart and Lung Endurance or Cardiovascular Endurance- the ability of the heart and lungs to work together to provide the needed oxygen and fuel to the body during sustained workloads. a. Maintain or even improve the efficient delivery and uptake of oxygen to your body's systems. b. Enhance cellular metabolism. c. Ease the physical challenges of everyday life. Muscular Endurance and Muscular Strength- is the amount of force a muscle can produce and the ability of the muscles to perform continuously without fatiguing. a. Reduce the risk of injury. b. Lead to healthier, stronger muscles and bones. c. Improve confidence and how you feel about yourself. d. Allow you to add new and different activities to your exercise program. Increasing the range of motion of joints b. Decreasing excessive muscle tension caused by shortened muscles. c. Body Composition- is the amount of fat mass compared to lean muscle mass, bone, and organs. a. Increased functional ability, allowing us to move and exercise more freely, which allows us to burn more calories. b. A lean and toned body.
