Filipino Traditional Game: Name of the game "Agawan Base" History Origin and Significance: Agawan Base is a traditional Filipino game deeply ingrained in the country's culture, forming part of the larong pinoy tradition. The name 'Agawan Base' translates to 'capture the base,' emphasizing the strategic and competitive nature of the game. It is a popular game played by children in both rural and urban areas of the Philippines, showcasing its widespread appeal. Traditional Roots and Gameplay: The game requires minimal equipment and is typically played outdoors, fostering physical activity and teamwork among participants. Players engage in strategic maneuvers, showcasing speed and teamwork as they aim to capture the opponent's base. Agawan Base exemplifies the essence of Filipino traditional games, reflecting the country's rich cultural heritage. Objectives The objective of Agawan Base is to capture the opposing team's base while protecting your own. To win, a team must successfully reach the enemy's base or tag as many opposing players as possible to gain control over the field. Number of players At least 4, two in each group (the more players, the more fun) Court Layout: Materials needed: Markers to be used as the base, 2 pcs. (you can use two trees or two slippers or two chairs as your bases) Rules of the game: 1. There will be 2 bases. Each base has equal members. 2. Mark your base with the base markers. 3. Assign a member to guard your base. Other members may run outside their base to capture the opponents or to steal the opponent’s base. 4. To capture the opponents, you must tag them. 5. The captured opponent will be the other team’s prisoner. He or she must stand in the captor’s base until his or her teammates tagged him or her to be saved. 6. To steal the base of the opponent and win, you must touch their base. Values of the game: Team work – agawan base requires teamwork because it is a game played as a group. Two groups would have to touch each other’s base to score a point. If you are not good at playing as a team, then agawan base is not for you. Friendship – you will develop friendship through this game because everyone has a strong desire to win and be friends with one another. Sportsmanship – if you lose, you’ll have to accept the result of the game and congratulate the winning group.
