**[Grade 10 - Study Guide ]** ----------------------------------------- **1- Study Guide for *The Hunger Games* by Suzanne Collins** ------------------------------------------------------------ ### **Introduction** - - - - - ### **Key Themes** 1. 2. 3. 4. ### **Important Characters** - - - - - **About the Title\ **The title *The Hunger Games* refers to a deadly competition created by the Capitol of Panem as punishment for a past rebellion. Each year, two young people from each district must fight to the death in a televised event. The name is chilling because it mixes starvation with the idea of fun games. **Summary** **Part I: The Tributes\ **Panem is a future nation built after disasters destroyed North America. Its Capitol is rich, while 12 districts provide resources but live in poverty. To punish a past rebellion, the Capitol created the Hunger Games, forcing young people to fight in a deadly competition. The story begins in District 12 with Katniss Everdeen, who cares for her sister Prim and widowed mother. During the annual \"reaping,\" Prim is chosen, but Katniss volunteers to take her place. Peeta Mellark, a boy who once helped Katniss, is the male tribute. They are sent to the Capitol, where they are trained and styled to attract sponsors. Their stylist, Cinna, creates fiery costumes, making Katniss \"the girl on fire.\" During training, Katniss shows her skill in archery, earning a high score. Peeta shocks everyone during his interview by admitting he loves Katniss, creating a \"star-crossed lovers\" story. **Part II: The Games\ **In the arena, Katniss survives the initial chaos and finds shelter. She teams up with Rue, a young girl from District 11, and they destroy the Careers' food supply. Rue is killed, and Katniss honors her with flowers, a rebellious act against the Capitol. A new rule allows two tributes from the same district to win. Katniss finds Peeta badly injured, and they become allies. She risks her life to get medicine for him, and they play up their romance to win favor with the audience. **Part III: The Victor\ **As the final survivors, Katniss and Peeta face Cato in a final battle. After he is killed, the Capitol announces only one can win. Katniss tricks the Capitol by threatening to eat poison berries with Peeta, forcing them to allow both to survive. Back at the Capitol, Katniss learns her defiance has angered the government, and she must pretend her actions were driven by love to protect herself and her family. Peeta feels betrayed, but Katniss is unsure of her true feelings. **Analysis\ The World of Panem\ **Panem is a dictatorship and a dystopia where the Capitol lives in luxury while the districts suffer. The Games are a tool to control and intimidate the population. **Katniss Everdeen\ **Katniss is a skilled, resourceful survivor driven by her love for her family. However, her distrust of others makes relationships difficult. **Peeta Mellark\ **Peeta is kind and selfless, risking his life for Katniss. He refuses to let the Capitol change who he is, showing quiet rebellion. **The Odds\ **The Games are unfair, favoring wealthy districts and attractive tributes. The Capitol manipulates the rules to maintain control, but Katniss defies them, becoming a symbol of resistance. **[Google Classroom:]** - **Unit 1 The Hunger Games:** All ================================ - **The Hunger Games Quotes:** ============================ "Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor." Effie Trinket --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This statement, supposedly wishing good luck to the tributes in the Hunger Games, is actually cruel. The odds are heavily stacked against all the competitors---there is only a 1-in-24 chance of winning---and tributes from the poorer districts are at an even greater disadvantage. Their names are likely to be in the pool more often in exchange for food, and they are pitted against Career Tributes from richer districts who are trained to compete in the Games their entire lives. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "You don\'t forget the face of the person who was your last hope." Katniss Everdeen Katniss Everdeen has this thought upon seeing the girl whom she once failed to rescue. The girl is now a slave in the Capitol, her tongue cut so she cannot speak. Throughout the book, Katniss continues to be haunted by those she could not help, and those whose deaths she feels responsible for. "I\'m more than just a piece in their Games." Peeta Mellark ----------------------------------------------------------- On the train to the Capitol, Peeta Mellark says this to Katniss Everdeen, revealing more depth than she was aware of. However, as the series progresses, Peeta is brainwashed into temporarily becoming the ultimate pawn in the Capitol\'s games---a powerful mouthpiece for their objectives, and an emotional weapon against Katniss. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Katniss, the girl who was on fire." Cinna ------------------------------------------ The head of Katniss Everdeen\'s prep team, Cinna describes how he wants spectators to remember her. Unknown to Katniss, Cinna is also secretly working to help her become a symbol of the rebellion. In this case, she is the fire of rebellion burning just below the surface throughout Panem. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ **2- Study Guide for *Macbeth* by William Shakespeare** ------------------------------------------------------- ### **Introduction** - - - - - ### **Key Themes** 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. ### **Important Characters** - - - - - - - ### ### **Act Summaries** **Course Hero:** https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz\_ZtyOWL9BRFH6yaCzmlYlB1OauljNJw&authuser=0 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. ### **Key Quotes** 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. **[Google Classroom:]** - **Unit 2 Macbeth:** All ======================= - - 3- **Study Guide for The Unseen Comprehension Text** **[Google Classroom:]** - 4- **Study Guide for Grammar:** **[Practice Grammar Worksheets]** [[https://www.englishgrammar.org/exercises/]](https://www.englishgrammar.org/exercises/) [[https://elt.oup.com/student/practicegrammar/advanced/a\_testzone/?cc=us&selLanguage=en]](https://elt.oup.com/student/practicegrammar/advanced/a_testzone/?cc=us&selLanguage=en) [[https://elt.oup.com/student/practicegrammar/?cc=us&selLanguage=en]](https://elt.oup.com/student/practicegrammar/?cc=us&selLanguage=en) [[https://ummassadhomeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/grammar-practice-10.pdf]](https://ummassadhomeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/grammar-practice-10.pdf) **5- Important Videos:** **1- Literary Devices Every Reader Should Know: Part 1:** ========================================================= [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86kknlI27\_E]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86kknlI27_E) **2- Paradox:** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0AVV7eWyrc]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0AVV7eWyrc) **3- Allusion:** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDbieGUgtis]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDbieGUgtis) **4- Juxtaposition:** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzalyV\_ZmH4]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzalyV_ZmH4) **5- Parallelism:** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbUxEl7CndU]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbUxEl7CndU) **6-** **Tone:** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guXu5C4-lZs]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guXu5C4-lZs) **7**- **Diction:** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvT6GxtDZn0]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvT6GxtDZn0) **8- Imagery:** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YG3p\_w4s6FY]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YG3p_w4s6FY) **9**- **How to write a topic sentence** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4\_o6ZohWM8]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4_o6ZohWM8) **10- How to analyze Quotes in Literature:** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBN0SQrVZcs]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBN0SQrVZcs)
