*The Crucible* Unit Test Review → Major plot points → The rituals in the woods (chanting, spell casting, Tituba helping Ruth contact her dead siblings, Abigail drinking a blood potion to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor, etc) → Betty falling ill (with the others) and they were not getting better---ultimately suspected of witchcraft in the forest with Tituba and the other young girls in town → The girs claiming they saw others "with the Devil"\-\--as a way to distract from their infractions → Elizabeth Proctor's arrest (for bewitching Abigail and sending out her spirit to kill her)\--we know it to be a ploy by Abigail to get rid of Elizabeth so that she can have John. She manages to survive by revealing her pregnancy (which delays her execution and trail), ultimately saving her in the long run--she remains alive until the birth of her baby which happens after the trails are over → John Proctor's inappropriate relationship with Abigail (lechery) which is the reason Abigail is in the forest to begin with (reasons); 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. → John Proctor's court appearances (fighting for his wife's release and the release of many of his friends → John Proctor (falling out with the church)\-\-\--DOUBLE PROBLEM: 1. 2. → He confesses but then rips up the confession and is put to death for his crimes → Hale first comes to be the town expert in the demonic arts, and comes a second time to help sway people to confess in order to save their lives (he no longer believes in the witch trails) → The Putnams are out for revenge and land because of past issues with Parris and other land owners---they are also out to get revenge for their lost babies → Giles Cores (dies nobly for his perceived sins so that his sons can have his land)\--his wife is ultimately hanged for reading books---he feels bad for accusing his wife of reading books → Rebecca Nurse (super saintly) but is still arrested for witchcraft and is hanged because she refuses to admit to something she didn't do → Abigail ultimately steals from her uncle, and runs away (becomming a prostitute in Boston) → Abigail and the other "children" faking being bewitched by the others in the town to further the farce that is the witch trials → Mary Warren (she is an agent of the court, neglecting her duties at the Proctor house--she is partly responsible for the witch trails but tries to c hange her ways to no avail) → Tituba being coerced into revealing the truth of what happened that night in the woods (ultimately self incriminating) → John Proctor trying to reconcile with his wife but tiptoeing around the issue (they cannot communicate until later in the play) → Study guide questions (done and taken up in class) → Major conflicts → Houses PARRIS HOUSE: Reverend Parris, Betty, & Abigail (Tituba--servant) PROCTOR HOUSE: John, Elizabeth & their children (and Mary Warren--servant) PUTNAM HOUSE: Mr. & Mrs. Putnam and Ruth (sole surviving child and seven dead babies) (and Mercy Lewis--servant) COREY HOUSE: Giles and Martha NURSE HOUSE: Rebecca & Francis Nurse → Characters and their roles in the play → Abigail and John (love affair?? Turned to hatred) → Proctor and Elizabeth (married, troubled marriage, reconcile at the end) → John & Parris (they don't like each other and it is the reason John leaves the church) → Putnams & Giles (fighting about land) → Mary Warren & Proctor (she is his maid, not fulfilling her duties as hired, becomes problematic) → Hale/Hathorne/Danforth (they have differing opinions on the trails) → Cheever and the Proctors (they were friends until the crying out, and then he was quick to arrest them and out them for perceived infractions---ex. plowing on Sunday, etc) - - - - - - - -
