Modern Art Term used to describe artistic works produced during the 19th century to the mid 20th century Expresses individuality Explores new perspective on reality and the nature of art itself, also the artist’s personal vision Modern art encompasses numerous movements: Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism. Impressionism - focuses on capturing the effects of light and atmosphere in a fleeting moment. Cubism - Deconstructing objects into geometric shapes and presenting multiple perspectives simultaneously. Expressionism - Conveying emotional experience through distorted forms and vivid colors. Contemporary Art Art made by living artists Refers to art created on the late 20th century to the present day Focuses on social impact In a Tropical Country, the temperature stays warm all year, with only small changes between seasons. That’s why the Philippines has a tropical climate with a lot of rain and sunshine. Making the Philippines rich in: FLORA - (plant life) and FAUNA - (animals) ART It is an imitation of life and the world rendered beautifully, which gives pleasure ARISTOTLE One of the earliest thinkers to provide assumptions about art In his work poetics, Aristotle discussed art, particularly focusing on drama, poetry, and tragedy He believed that art imitates life and that this imitation (or “mimesis”) is a natural human activity. He thought art could teach, provide pleasure, and even lead to catharsis - an emotional release for the audience Aristotle’s ideas about art were some of the earliest in the Western philosophy and have influenced how people think about art for centuries 2 IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF ART Medium This refers to the materials or tools an artist uses to create the artwork, such as paint, clay, pencils, or digital tools. The medium can affect the style and appearance of the artwork. Subject The subject is what the artwork is about / what you see in the art. It could be a person, landscape, object, or even an idea. The subject helps communicate the artist’s message to the viewer 8 Major Forms of Art 1. PICTURE Two-dimensional, Visual art created on surfaces like canvas or paper, including paintings, drawings, and prints. It typically aims to represent or express ideas and emotions through imagery. 2. SCULPTURE Three-dimensional art formed by shaping materials such as stone, metal, wood or clay. It can be freestanding or relief, and often explores form, space, and texture. 3. ARCHITECTURE Structure that meant to be used as shelter. Its art relies on the design and purpose of the structure. 4. MUSIC Art form that appeals to the senses of hearing, composed by combining notes into harmony. 5. LITERATURE Art form of language through the combined use of words, creating meaning and experience. 6. THEATER Art of performance. Dramatic text is portrayed on stage by actors and actresses and is enhanced by props, lights and sounds. Form of art in which artists use their voice and/or their bodies, often in relation to other objects, to convey artistic expression. 7. CINEMA A technological translation of theater, special effects are utilized to enhance the story telling. 8. DANCING Art of the human form, body is used, mobilized and choreographed in a specific time, form and space.
