LINE  Line gives direction to a design and breaks up large areas into small areas. Line creates movement in a design by carrying the eye from one area to another.  Vertical lines give an illusion of height, dignity and strength.  Horizontal lines give a feeling of relaxation  Diagonal lines suggest activity and excitement  Curve lines create an appearance of softness and fullness. Lines in clothing may either be structural or decorative  Structural lines are formed as the pieces of garments are sewn together  Decorative lines are those that are applied to the garment and add interest. Photo TEXTURE Texture helps to make things look bigger or smaller.  Smooth texture will make you appear smaller than you are  Dull textures absorb light and will make you appear smaller  Shiny textures tend to add weight or size since they reflect light and emphasize body curve  Crisp textures make you look bigger because the fabric stands away from your body.  Fuzzy textures will add visual size to the area where you wear it. Principles of Design The principles of design are guides that tell you how the elements of design should be combined. They include rhythm, proportion, balance, emphasis and harmony. RHYTHM  Rhythm causes the eye to move smoothly from one part of the design to another as if everything belongs together. It can be seen when lines, colour, forms and texture are repeated in a design. RHYTHM PROPORTION  The relationship of one part to another and to all the parts to the whole.  Proportion includes sizes, weights, colours and shapes BALANCE  This is the arrangement of objects in an even, pleasing way with equal visual weight on each side. Formal Balance Informal Balance EMPHASIS  This speaks of the focal point or centre of interest of a garment.  Emphasis helps to focus attention on the most important areas of the design HARMONY  This principle of harmony is the relationship of all the parts within a design  Harmony is achieve when all the elements are used.
