WORK IMMERSION CONCEPT NOTES Sir Elwin | Work Immersion | 2024 CONCEPT NOTE 1 Lesson 1: Introduction to Work Immersion Three (3) classifications of subjects in Senior High School (SHS), they are Core Subjects; Applied Subject; and Specialized Subjects. Work Immersion in one (1) of the nine (9) specialized subjects and it also allotted 80 hours just like the other subjects. Definition of work immersion According to the DepEd Order No. 40, series of 2015, Work Immersion refers to the part of Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum consisting of 80 hours of hands-on experience of work simulation which the Grade 11 and 12 students will undergo to expose them to the actual workplace setting and to enrich the competencies provided by the school under the supervision of the School Head and the designated personnel of the Partner. The department of Education issued DepEd Order No. 30, series 2017 entitled Guidelines for Work Immersion which is the basis for the implementation of Work Immersion in all Senior High Schools (SHSs). DepEd Order No. 30, series 2017 Section 1: Rationale One of the goals of the K-12 Education Program is to develop in learners the competencies, work ethics and values relevant to pursuing further education and/or joining the world of work. To achieve greater congruence with the basic education and the nation’s development targets, Work Immersion, a required subject, before been integrated in the curriculum. This subject will provide the learners with the following opportunities: 1. to become familiar with the work place 2. for employment simulation 3. to apply their competencies in areas of specialization/applied subject in authentic work environments. To achieve those objectives, Work Immersion is therefore a requirement for graduation from secondary education. Learners are immersed on the actual work environment such as workshops, offices and laboratories in which their prior training is relevant. But this is given clarification on DepEd Order No. 39, series 2018. Though the intention of Work Immersion is to provide SHS Learners with opportunities to become familiar with the workplace, simulate employment, and to apply their competencies in areas of specialized/applied subjects in actual work environments, DepEd recognized other options that may equally prepare learners for all curriculum exits. ✓ For all tracks, schools may opt to devise unique delivery model with a minimum of 80 hours and a maximum of 320 hours following the curriculum guide. PAGE 1 ✓ All TVL Learners shall have completed the required leaning competencies of a particular specialized before Work Immersion. ✓ The nominal duration of specialization for TVL, shall be considered in crafting the delivery model of school For other tracks: ✓ Accountancy. Business and Management (ABM) learners may have Business Enterprise Simulation ✓ Humanities and Social Science Strand (HUMSS) learners may take Culminating Activity ✓ Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), learners may take Research/ Capstone Project ✓ General Academic Strand (GAS) learners may take Research/ Capstone Project or Culminating Activity ✓ For Sports Track, learners may take Apprenticeship (Off-Campus) ✓ For Arts and Design Track, learners may take Performing Arts for Production or Exhibits for Arts Production Definition of Terms: 1) Public or private institution or organizations that are able and willing to lend their expertise and resources. (PARTNER INSTITUTION) 2) Refers to the subject of the Senior High School Curriculum, which involves hands-on experience or work simulation in which learners can apply their competencies and acquired knowledge relevant to their track. (WORK IMMERSION) 3) A legally binding document, which spells out the specific terms and conditions between and among parties entering into partnership to implement a program. (MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT) 4) The place where Work Immersion is conducted. It shall conform to the law and the rules and regulations of safety, appropriateness for learning, and availability of facilities and equipment which are issued by the DepEd Order No. 40, series 2015. (WORKPLACE IMMERSION VENUE) 5) The relationship between the partner institution and the school, or any office of DepEd (Central, Regional, or Division) that responds to the needs of K-12 program in general, and Senior High School in particular, which is formalized through Memorandum of Agreement. (PARTNERSHIP) PAGE 2 CONCEPT NOTE 2 Lesson 2: Expected behavior and work ethics ▪ Ethics - derived from the Greek word ethos, meaning habit, custom, disposition or character, system of moral principles. ▪ Work ethics - are the set of rules, values, moral principles, and standards that need to be followed by both employers and employees in the workplace. It refers to a set of behavioral rules that create a positive environment at work. ▪ Strong Work Ethics – People who possess a strong work ethic embody certain principles that guide their work behavior. ▪ Negative Work Ethics – Lack of productivity, reliability, accountability, and growing sphere of unprofessional/unhealthy relationship. Here are 8 workplace safety tips every employee should know to ensure all employees are engaged in developing a safety program that encourages the shared responsibility of everyone in the workplace. 8 WORKPLACE SAFETY TIPS EVERY EMPLOYEE SHOULD KNOW - Be aware of new safety procedures - Be aware of surroundings. and protocols. - Keep correct posture. - Keep emergency exits clear. - Take regular breaks. - Report unsafe conditions. - Always wear personal protective - Never take shortcuts in procedure. equipment. PAGE 4 CONCEPT NOTE 4 Lesson 4: Workplace rights and responsibilities Presidential Decree No. 442, s. 1974 (Labor Code of the Philippines) - is a decree instituting a labor code, thereby revising and consolidating labor and social laws to afford protection to labor, promote employment and human resources development and ensure industrial peace based on social justice. THE WORKERS BASIC RIGHTS Security of Tenure - Every employee shall be assured security of tenure. No employee can be dismissed from work except for a just or authorized cause, and only after due process. Work Days and Work Hours - An employee must be paid his or her wages for all hours worked. If all or any part of his or her regular work hours falls between 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., a covered employee shall be entitled to a night shift pay in addition to his or her pay for regular work hours. If he or she works for more than 8 hours in one day, he or she shall be entitled to overtime pay. Weekly Rest Day - A rest day of 24 consecutive hours after 6 days of work should be scheduled by the employer upon consultation with the workers. Wage and Wage-Related Benefits - Wage is the amount paid to an employee in exchange for a task, piece of work, or service rendered to an employer. This includes overtime, night differential, rest day, holiday and 13th month pay. It also includes the fair and reasonable value of board, lodging and other facilities customarily furnished by the employer. Payment of Wages - Wages shall be paid in cash, legal tender at or near the place of work. Payment may be made through a bank upon written petition of majority of the workers in establishments with 25 or more employees and within one (1) kilometer radius to a bank. Payment shall be made directly to the employees. Right to Self-Organization and Collective Bargaining - The right to self-organization is the right of every worker, free of any interference from the employer or from government, to form or join any legitimate worker's organization, association or union of his or her own choice. Except those classified as managerial or confidential employees, all employees may form or join unions for purposes of collective bargaining and other legitimate concerted activities. An employee is eligible for membership in an appropriate union on the first day of his or her employment. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE EMPLOYER AND THE WORKER RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE EMPLOYER To make a work agreement with the employee, agreeing on conditions, time and place; To follow up with the employee on the agreed terms; To supervise and provide suitable conditions of work so workers have security, health and dignity; To honor terms of payment; PAGE 5 To safeguard standards, staff and environment; To register and pay into social security for the employee; To take care of the well‐being of staff and qualified dependents (e.g. wife/husband, children); To agree on a performance contract. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE WORKER To personally perform the work in the time, place and conditions as agreed upon; To follow the instructions of the worker’s boss; To avoid any issues or problems at the workplace that will endanger the worker or his/her colleagues; To follow the rules at work.
