HOME ABOUT CONTENT OTHERS Food historians usually credit John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, with inventing the sandwich we know today. He was an English nobleman who loved to gamble. The story goes that in 1762, during a long 24-hour gambling session, he asked his cook to make food in a way that wouldn't stop him from playing. The cook served him sliced meat between two pieces of toast, which worked perfectly. He could eat it with one hand and keep the other hand free for the game. The first English cookbook author to mention a sandwich is John Montagu's contemporary, Elizabeth Raffald. She was an English cook and author who published a cookbook in 1769. National Sandwich Day is celebrated every year on November 3rd in the United States. This day honors the invention of the sandwich, which is traditionally attributed to John Montagu.
