What Are Communication Strategies? Why should we make a deliberate effort to communicate clearly with others? 1. What do you do whenever: a. a person keeps on talking, and you want to contribute to the discussion as well? b. a person talks about a topic that does not interest everyone in the group? c. a person keeps on talking, but you need to end the conversation because you have to leave already? d. a person keeps on talking, but you want another person who has not contributed yet to the discussion to express his or her opinion as well? e. a person talks about a sensitive topic, and you sense that the other members of the group are not comfortable with talking about 2. Restriction – involves limiting what the participants can contribute to the conversation or discussion If you had to choose just three words to describe yourself, what would those three words be? Turn-taking – refers to the process in which a participant stops speaking and yields the floor to another participant so that he or she can speak Vanessa: Do you think this is already okay? Or should we add more designs? Hazel: I think this is good to go. Adding more designs would probably make it look cluttered and overwhelming. Vanessa: Yeah, you’re right. Topic control – occurs when the main or assigned speaker manipulates the discussion in order to maintain its flow without moving away from or changing the topic That’s a good question, but it’s no longer connected to our topic. Let’s discuss this first, and I can answer that question later. Topic shifting – occurs when one intentionally or unintentionally changes the direction of the flow of ideas in a conversation Ryan: Were you able to watch the basketball game on television last night? Ruel: Yes. It was a really good game. It made me miss playing basketball. Would you like to play a game over the weekend? I’ll invite some of our classmates too. Repair – refers to the act of fixing the violations in a communication situation The meeting is going to be on the 25th... oh I mean on the 24th of May. Termination – refers to the act of ending a conversation I really would love to talk more, but I have a meeting in five minutes. I’ll call you later, okay? Read the dialogue below and identify the communication strategy shown in the underlined lines. Alexa: Hey, I have to tell you something, but you have to promise me you wouldn’t yell at me afterward. Jennie: What is it? Go ahead and tell me. I won’t yell at you. Alexa: Well... You let me borrow a dress so that I’ll have a costume for the play, right? The thing is, I—or rather—my sister got ketchup on it as I got home. Jennie: Oh no. Is it permanently stained? Alexa: I don’t know yet. I gave it to my mom so that she could try to get the stain out. I appreciate it that you told me right away. Alexa: So you’re not angry? Jennie: I’m a bit upset about the dress, but I’m not angry. By the way, are you done with your math homework? Alexa: Not yet. I have to do it now before our lunch break is over. Would you like to go with me to the library? Choose one from the topics below and write a dialogue based on the situation you have chosen. Your dialogue should make use of at least four communication strategies. 1. You are a teacher discussing the importance of using inclusive language. 2. You are a consumer bargaining with a vendor about some items you want to buy. 3. You are a tourist asking for directions from a local. Values Integration In what ways can you apply your learnings from this lesson in having a successful conversation with your friends? 1. Decide on a topic and create a dialogue about it. 2. Make sure to include at least five communication strategies. 3. Then, act out the dialogue in front of the class. After the activity, answer these questions: 1. Which communication strategy was the easiest to create and perform? Why do you think so? 2. Which communication strategy was the most difficult to create and perform? Why do you think so? 3. Talking about the same topic, will you be able to use the communication strategies smoothly in an unpracticed situation? 4. Based on the activity, what should one remember for a conversation to become successful? Assignment 1. Have a conversation with your sibling or parents about the topic below. Topic: Lowering the criminal liability age from 15 to 9 2. Make sure to record your conversation so that you can transcribe it later. 3. After transcribing, take note of the communication strategies that your siblings or parents used.
