Power Point 3 Common plumbing hand and power tools LESSON INTENT Leaners will be able to identify the following tools and how to safely use that tool: Common Plumbing Hand and Power Tools Using common hand tools to carry Plumbing tasks Operating common power tools Hand Tools Power Tools Battery or Corded Safety Requirements for tools HAND TOOLS FOR PLUMBERS ACTIVITY Doing PowerPoint make sure that you are doing the tools list in your workbook. Filling it out as you go ensuring that all information is correct. Spanners All plumbers’ toolboxes will include a variety of spanners. Spanners can be adjustable or of a fixed size. Spanners have flat faces to their jaws, which means that they should fit snuggly against the flat faces of a nut or bolt. If an incorrect spanner is used, or the adjustment is incorrect, the flat face of the nut of bolt could be ‘rounded’. This will damage the nut or bolt and could potentially hurt the operative, if the tool slips. Hammers & Mallets Masonry Chisels & Wood Chisels Mushroom Head!! Saws Water Pump Pliers, Footprints, Stilsons & Vice Grips Pliers and Side Cutters Screwdrivers, Allen Keys & Bradawl Pipe Cutters and Files Spirit Levels Pipe Bending Tools Blow Torches and Heat Mats Specialist Tools Pipe Freezing Kits PORTABLE PIPE FREEZING KITS Clamps are placed either side of the working area. The machine is switched on and water is lightly sprayed onto the clamps. This builds up a layer of ice on the outside of the pipe. The temperature is then transferred to the water inside the pipe. This kit is re-useable. PORTABLE PIPE FREEZING KITS When using a refrigerant kit, clamps are placed onto the pipe, either side of the working area. These clamps are filled with refrigerant. Water is sprayed lightly over the clamps, which ice up. This temperature is then transferred to the water inside the pipes. Replacement refrigerant sprays are required.
