Name: Aysha Ahmed Global 9 Date: 9/27/24 Code of Hammurabi **[Task]**: Read the linked article *8 Things You May Not Know About Hammurabi's Code* (from **History.com**) with a partner. Answer the following questions based on the handout **[in complete sentences.]** Use ***Code of Hammurabi*** link and watch the embedded video to answer question 1. 1\. The Code of Hammurabi is the legal code proclaimed by Hammurabi, who ruled Babylon from 1792 to 1750 B.C (dates). The code was a collection of 282 (how many) laws. 2\. Hammurabi's Code is a famous example of *[lex talionis]*. What is meant by that term? That means it\'s a form of retaliatory justice commonly associated with the saying "an eye for an eye". 3\. Find evidence in the reading of punishment for crime based on social class. What does this tell you about the beliefs/values of the people in charge? The severity of their crimes depended on their identity. This tells me about their beliefs/values of the people in charge is they aren't fair to lower status individuals. 4\. What was an advantage in allowing most crimes to be settled by the payment of a fine? An advantage in allowing most crimes to be settled by the payment of a fine is that if a person was to harm a person that was their equal then they would also receive that punishment in return. 5\. Thinking about the laws of the United States, do you see any similarities with Hammurabi's code? Be sure to give examples! Yes, I see similarities with Hammurabi's code with the United States laws such as divorce, property rights, and even minimum wage laws. 6\. How do you think the people of Babylon felt about the Code of Hammurabi? Take a position and explain why you feel this way in 3-4 sentences. **Hint**: Consider the social class and rank when taking your position. I think the people of Babylon felt angry, scared, sad, but sometimes happy concerning the code of Hammurabi. I think this because based on their punishments given, they aren't fair to the people of a lower class. I think women might have felt angry and sad that they weren't given equal rights as men. I think they may have felt happy at times because many rules concerning divorce and property rights were put in place. 7\. What do historians believe happened to the *stele* of Hammurabi in the 12^th^ century B.C.? When was the stele rediscovered and where is it presently? Historians believe that the Elamite King Shutruk- Nahhunte plundered the stele during the 12^th^ century raid on the Babylonian city of Sippar and then he brought back to Susa as a treasure of war. The stele was rediscovered in 1901 and now it is kept on display at the Louvre Museum located in Paris.
