Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION TO ERGONOMICS AND FACILITIES PLANNING Rhenz Frederick Haldos, MM, LPT TOPIC LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Define the Ergonomics in hospitality industry. 2. Explain the purpose and importance of Ergonomics. 3. Understand the Five Features of Ergonomics. 4. Apply the Elements of Visual Design in Facilities Planning WHAT IS ERGONOMICS? Ergon means 'work' and nomos means 'natural law' As science, ergonomics identifies the physical properties of work and how the way it is done affects the body. The primary goal is to fit jobs people, not people to jobs. Ergonomics (or human factors) prevents these types of injuries by fitting the job to the person using proper equipment and work practices. This results in the safest way to work and prevents workplace injuries. The high number of sprains and strains in the hospitality industry concerns employers, and workers. IMPORTANCE OF ERGONOMICS Ergonomics is an important part of research in product development process. Its purpose is to increase safety, comfort, and performance of a product or an environment. Ergonomics uses anthropometrical data to determine the optimum size, shape, and form of a product, and make it easier for people to use. Defined as a study of people in their working environment. More specifically, an ergonomist who designs or modifies the work to fit the worker. The goal is to eliminate discomfort and injury due to work. HOW TO USE COLOR IN ORDER TO CREATE THE NECESSARY AMBIANCE TO CONFORM WITH THE THEME AND CONCEPT OF A HOSPITALITY OR TOURISM FACILIT Y, IT IS IMPORTANT TO DECIDE WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING IS NEEDED: A. TO CREATE A COOL OR WARM ATMOSPHERE B. TO CREATE A SPACIOUS OR A SMALL SPACE C. TO CREATE A DARK OR BRIGHT ROOM D. TO DENOTE AS CODE OF FUNCTION OR SAFET Y E. TO S TIMULATE OR REDUCE EXCITABILIT Y COMMON APPLICATIONS OF COLORS IN ROOMS: A. OFFICES – COOL AND PASTEL B. INDUSTRIAL – RED (FIRE); YELLOW (DANGE R) GREEN (FI RS T AID) C. COMMERCIAL – S TIMULATING & EXCITING (LOBBY); NEU TRAL (CORRIDORS) D. INSTITUTIONAL – PASTEL COLORS PATTERN PROVIDES INTERESTING POINTS IN THE SPACE WHICH GIVES A SENSE OF DIRECTION AND DIMENSION. A. COMPLEX – COMPOSITION OF SEVERAL CRISSCROSSING LINES THAT CAN LIVEN UP THE GROUP B. VERTICAL LINES – USED TO ADD HEIGHT IN SMALL ROOM\ C. HORIZONTAL LINES – SENSE OF SPACE THAT THE ROOM IS BIGGER OR SHORTEN THE HEIGHT OF SMALL ROOM D. FLORAL – SHOWS GENERAL ACCENT AND LIGHTING E. MOTIFS – NORMALLY RELATED TO ARCHITECTURAL ST YLE F. ANIMAL PRINT – NOT LIMITED TO FUR OR SKINS BUT CAN BE A REPRESENTATION OF ANIMALS QUESTIONS?
