# The Natural World: Climate Zones & Biomes Do you like geography? Well, it is great if you do, because this lesson will focus on some geographical facts. I think that you will be able to revise your geographical knowledge a bit and as we go along, learn some new words in English. I hope you will enjoy the lesson. Study the diagram below. -23°C -7°C +24°C +26°C +22°C -33°C (https://www.google.com/search?q=climate+zones+of+the+planet) The diagram shows the Earth with the following zones: | Latitude/Circle | Zone| |:---|:---| | 90°N North Pole | Polar Zone | | 66.5°N Arctic Circle | Temperate Zone | | 23.5°N Tropic of Cancer | Tropical Zone | | 0º Equator | Tropical Zone | | 23.5°S Tropic of Capricon | Temperate Zone | | 66.5°S Antarctic Circle | Polar Zone | | 90°S South Pole | Polar Zone | ### The Polar Zone Match the typical biomes¹ of the polar zone to their characteristics given in the table. | Polar Region | Taiga | Tundra | |:---|:---|:---| | Sunless in winter |   | Soilless Environment | Longer growing season than in Tundra forests | | Capped with permanent ice |   | Treeless Environment | Wider range of species than in Tundra | | Intense everlasting cold |   | Few Plants and animals |   | | Plankton-rich waters |   |   |   | The polar regions are the coldest places on Earth and differ the most from every other habitat on the planet. During the summer months, the days receive 24 hours of pure sunshine, but during the winter, the sun is barely seen at all. Animals that inhabit nature's freezers have to be well adapted to living in the cold, and often have a thick layer of fat or blubber to help to keep them warm. (Blubber is the fat of whales, seals, and similar sea animals.) ¹ Biomes are defined as "the world's major communities, classified according to the predominant vegetation and characterized by adaptations of organisms to that particular environment” (Campbell).
