## The Temperate Zone Below are the typical biomes of the temperate zone, which you should know very well. Complete the table with missing words. There is sometimes a letter jumble to help you. ### Temperate Forests | Region | Characteristics | |---|---| | Evergreen temperate forests | Forests of evergreen trees and shrubs | | Coniferous trees | | | Deciduous trees | | ### Mediterranean Regions | Region | Characteristics | |---|---| | | Hot, rainless summer months | | | Mediterranean scrub (both tall and short scrub) is the most common vegetation | ### Temperate Grasslands | Region | Characteristics | |---|---| | Interiors of large continents | Extreme changes in temperature from one season to the next | | | Drier than coastal regions | | | Too little rain for forest, but enough to prevent the desert from forming | | | 3 main types of grassland: tall grass, mid-grass and short grass | | | Fertile topsoil | The cycle of seasons: four. Seasonal changes in heat, light, moisture. ## The Tropical Zone Below are the typical biomes of the tropical zone. Some characteristics of each biome are already written in the table below, while others have to still be decided upon. Match the characteristics to each biome and write the corresponding numbers into the boxes. ### Tropical Rainforest | Region | Characteristics | |---|---| | | Consists of a series of five layered habitats (emergent layer, canopy, middle layer, shrub, ground layer) | ### Monsoon Regions | Region | Characteristics | |---|---| | | The dramatic contrast between the dry and the rainy season | | | Fertile forestlands, bamboo grows there | ### Savannas (UK) / Savannas (US) | Region | Characteristics | |---|---| | | Unlike the temperate grasslands where the summers are hot and winters cold, savannah regions are always warm | | | Humid savannahs (3-5 dry months) | | | Dry savannahs (6-7 dry months) | | | Thornbush savannahs (8-10 dry months) | ### Deserts | Region | Characteristics | |---|---| | Hot and cold deserts | | ## Mountain Regions Choose from the words in the box to complete the text below. * average * blood * breakdown * conditions * evaporation * fleecy * harsh * ice * limited * lowlanders * occur * sparsely * tropical Mountain regions are special because they are not **limited** to a certain climate zone. They are usually thinly **populated**. Plants, animals and humans are adapted to **harsh** mountain conditions. Plants have **fleecy** white hair to reduce **evaporation**. Animals have a higher total content of **blood** and more red cells than **lowlanders**. Altitude determines **conditions** of life. The temperature falls by 2°C every 300 metres. Zones of different life at different levels: from forest at the base of low latitude mountains to arctic-type of life in the zone of **ice** and snow. The soil develops with the **breakdown** of the rocks. ## Reading and Gap Fill Read the text about the polar regions and fill each gap with one missing word.
