Scenario 2 b. You look outside the window and see heavy rains. The wind is howling and you know that a storm is taking place. All of a sudden, your roof is carried by the wind and your house begins to shake due to heavy rains and turbulent winds. Then from the horizon, you see waves ten times higher than your house coming. What would you do? Scenario 3 c. Before you are carried away by the giant waves, gentle hands start o shake you. You wake up and feel your parents’ embrace. Your mother is caressing your hair since you look so terrified. She says with a gentle smile, “You are having bad dreams because you did not pray again before sleeping.” You now realize everything is just a dream and it is 7AM of a beautiful sunny Sunday. What would you say? Scenario 4 d. The same day when you were having breakfast, your father takes the newspaper and appears to be verifying something when he drops his coffee and starts jumping, dancing, and shouting with joy. He embraces you and your mom saying. “I won the jackpot in lotto.” You shake your head and slap your fac to wake up in case you are dreaming again. You hit your face quite hard that it becomes red but you are awake. This is real and you are not dreaming. What would you finally say? 2ND QUARTER: LESSON 1 Revisiting Our Prayer Life Which circumstances in your life require you to pray? Saint Paul -he used to be called ‘Saul’, upon his conversion, he was called Paul which indicated that he became a new person -he preferred to be called “Apostle to the Gentiles” -wrote 13 letters, which are included in the New Testaments in the Bible -St. Paul was martyred in Rome THE BELIEVERS PRAY FOR BOLDNESS (ACTS 4: 24-29) In the spirit of mission, what could have been the impact of St. Paul’s prayer to the believers? - It provides them with both spiritual encouragement and a model for their relationship with God and their mission work. - strengthen faith, encouraging boldness in mission, promoting spiritual growth, modeling dependence on God, fostering gratitude towards God Saint Stephen -he is known to be the first Christian martyr -St. Stephen was stoned to death Many of the early followers of Jesus were humiliated and whipped in public, arrested, and imprisoned, even killed. Fr. Elias Bareng - was killed while trying to protect children and adults from the hands of tribal armed men Fr. Leonardus Vande Winkle - was killed by a group of armed men whose political conviction he vehemently opposed Fr. Conrado de la Cruz - missing since 1980 in Guatemala and counted among thousands of people who have been killed by death squads abd security forces during those troubled times. Fr. Carlos Garcia - who was killed by bandits whom he had given a ride along highway in Nigeria CICM: The Mission, 2007 THE BELIEVERS PRAY FOR BOLDNESS (ACTS 4: 24-29) Saint Paul reminds his people in this reading that someone who intends to preach the God News expects to face hindrances, indifferences, mockery, resistance, and even presecution. The believers’ prayer for boldness speaks of their determination to do what is right without counting the cost. PAUL’S PRAYER TO THE PHILIPPIANS (PHILIPPIANS 1: 3-7) St. Paul speaks of how happy he is whenever he thinks and prays for his brothers and sisters in faith. He said this prayer while he was in chain. He drove a demon from a slave girl and this led to his arrest, flogging, and imprisonment. Instead of getting depressed for being imprisoned, ST. Paul spent his time writing and praying. REQUEST FOR PRAYER (2 THESSALONIANS 3: 1-5) What was St. Paul’s request for prayer all about? St. Paul is invoking everyone to pray so that God’s Word may be received by those who hear it. The reading also implores us to pray for each other. This is the communitarian aspect of Christianity. CHURCH TEACHING PAGE 16 PRAYER The anchor of prayer is faith because it is only when we have faith that praying makes sense. The key elements of faith are... When we pray, we believe that God is present in our midst and we do acknowledge His being God. To trust means to commit since it implies unconditional acceptance of the one whom we have faith in. DEFINITION OF PRAYER a.)Vulgar Latin - precare - Latin Precari = to ask earnestly, beg, entreat b.)Hebrew words - palal = to pray, to intervene, or judge - tellipillah = a prayer set to music and sung in the formal services c.)Greek Words - Echomai = to wish - Proseuchomai = supplication - Erotao = to interrogate, to ask, desire - Deomai = to beg, make a request, to petition DEFINITION OF PRAYER The origin of the word prayer talks about dialogue, a two way communication between God and human beings either personally or on behalf of other persons, either to praise, beg, bless, or for other reasons. SAINT TERESA OF AVILA DEFINITION OF PRAYER The origin of the word prayer talks about dialogue, a two way communication between God and human beings either personally or on behalf of other persons, either to praise, beg, bless, or for other reasons. SAINT TERESA OF AVILA “nothing else than being on terms of friendship with God” and an “intimate conversation with God who we know loves us (CFC, 1475) KINDS OF PRAYER CFC,1476 says, “...As creatures called to become children of God, our prayer is one of adoration of our Creator and thanksgiving to our heavenly Father, whom we petition for our needs. As sinners, we pray in contrition for forgiveness from our divine Savior, and offer him all our thoughts, words, and deeds.” Thus, we have the basic types of prayer- 1. ADORATION this is the prayer we say before God because He is our Almighty Father and as persons who are made in His image and likeness we are moved to adore God for His greatness As the CCC, 2628 clearly states... the prayer of adoration flows from a grateful heart through our adoration prayer, we are enjoined to bear witness that we are children of God 2. CONTRITION in this prayer, we acknowledge our limitations before God, that sometimes we do wrong to ourselves, to others, nature, and God through the prayer of contrition, we seek forgiveness for our shortcomings we ask mercy from God for the wrong things we have and promise not to repeat them we ask God for more understanding, wisdom, and strength... as Psalm 51:3 beautifully express... 3. THANKSGIVING emphasize the brighter side of life is what thanksgiving prayer all about we give thanks to God for His goodness He gave us life as our greatest gift; so this life must be spent in thanksgiving. 4.SUPPLICATION this prayer is all about praying for ourselves, neighbors, and nature (our capacity to love enables us to think about the welfare of others) Intercession is a prayer of supplication leading us to pray as Jesus did. In many instances, Jesus showed what it means to intercede for others. Even up to the very last moment of His life, Jesus prayed for others. we should pray for each other at all times just like what Jesus did OUR FATHER EXPRESSIONS OF PRAYER 1. VOCAL PRAYER 2. MEDITATION 3. COMTEMPLATIVE PAGE 21 PRAYER 1.VOCAL PRAYER - refers to the words that come out from our mouth -through singing, psalm recitals, and it includes both verbal and mental prayers 2. MEDITATION - the mind seeks to understand the “why and how of the Christian life, in order to adhere and respond to what the Lord is asking” (CCC, 2702) - we ask the Lord what He wants us to do -helps us to understand clearly what it means to be loved by God, why Jesus suffered our of love 3. COMTEMPLATIVE PRAYER - praying alone for a long period of time since they find happiness in praying in silence -time does not matter, he/she pray for hours without getting tired (the longer he/she prays, the better it becomes St. Teresa of Avila, “It is nothing else than a close sharing between friends, it means taking time frequently to be alone with God who we know love us.” In contemplative prayer, we shed our mask and become who we truly are before God. TEACHERS OF PRAYER SAINTS WHO ARE MODELS OF FAITH: Mother Mary St. Teresa of Avila St. Monica St. Claire Jesus, showed us what it means to live a life of prayer. PLACES FOR PRAYER AND WORHSIP We can pray anywhere and anytime but we need to consider that there are designated places for prayer and worship. OLD TESTAMENT: some places in the mountains, wilderness were considered sacred or holy places for prayer Israelites considered some places like Shechem, Bethel, Mamre, and Beer- sheba. Within their midst, they also had WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE the text or tabernacle and the Ark of the TO PRAY? Covenant. NEW TESTAMENT: Jesus find time to pray alone in the mountains and wilderness. In silent places, chapel and churches, we can be alone with ourselves and can look further into the depths of our hearts. WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO PRAY? What are the proper decorum while attending community prayers and worship? What clothes do we wear that are proper and attuned to prayer? Suggestions to grow in faith, hope, love, and how to deepen our relationship with God: a.) We should understand and accept the importance of prayer in our life. b.) We should exert serious efforts to develop a better prayer life. c.) We should allow ourselves to experience and enjoy praying. d.) We should find time to be alone and pray in silence. THANK YOU!
