BACKGROUND OF THE ROSARY Practice by the Laity to Imitate Monks ○ The laity, many of whom could not read, substituted 50 or 150 Hail Marys for the Psalms. ○ To count the Hail Marys, they made knots on a cord or used beads. Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary ○ The feast, originally called the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, was renamed by Pope Gregory XIII to the Feast of the Holy Rosary. Apparition at Fatima (May 13, 1917) ○ At Fatima, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three young peasant children—Francisco, Jacinta, and Lucia. ○ Mary promised that peace would be granted to the world if her requests for prayer, reparation, and consecration were heard and obeyed. OBJECTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT THE ROSARY “The Rosary is not in the Bible” From his childhood (Joyful Mysteries), through his public life (Luminous Mysteries), to HIs passion and death ( Sorrowful Mysteries). The Rosary is a compendium of the Gospel The Rosary is a biblical prayer par excellence. Therein all the mysteries of Christ’s life are contemplated, one by one. The Hail Mary in the bible. It is composed by God Our Father is in the bible. Each of the contemplated mysteries belongs to passages of the Gospel “The Rosary is too repetitious” The Rosary is more than a prayer, it is a meditation. It has a positive effect in Christians when performed with a deep spirit of meditation in the mysteries of faith. Moreover, we all like to be told we are loved; but if we are told 50 times, even better. When things are repeated with a new intention, each repetition is like the first time. “I only do it when I feel like it” It has to be a strong conviction. God does not need my prayer, but ourselves. If we stop praying, God does not lose anything, but it is us who lose His graces THE BLOCK ROSARY What is Block Rosary?
