# Motivation - Your willingness to finish a task. - Its origin is Latin and means "to move". - The processes that account for an individual's intensity, direction, and persistence of effort toward attaining organizational goals. - You need to figure out what people want/need. ## The Three Key Elements of Motivation - **Intensity**: The amount of effort put forth to meet the goal. (How hard should I work?) - **Direction**: Efforts are channeled towards organizational goals. (What should I do?) - **Persistence**: How long the effort is maintained. (How long should I work?) ## 2 Types ### Intrinsic Motivation - Comes from you, relationship between worker and task. - Ex: Volunteer (sense of purpose), accomplishment ### Extrinsic Motivation - Comes from external factors. - Ex: Money, promotion, connections. ## Some People are Motivated by Extrinsic Factors - Tangible/instrumental rewards: Pay increases, promotions, bonuses, stock options etc. - Status, recognition, reputation, work environment, and family-work relationship, etc. ## People are also motivated by intrinsic factors (not just money) - Challenge, desire to learn, task enjoyment, task meaningfulness, fairness, social interaction, etc. - Provides feelings of accomplishment and self-worth - As long as it's not so challenging as to be impossible. ## Why is Employee Motivation Important? - Employee motivation is a critical aspect at the workplace that affects the performance of your team, your department, and the organization itself. - It also affects employee commitment, job satisfaction, ongoing development, and work-related efficiency. ## We Can Increase Employee Motivation by Job (Redesign) Processes - Job Characteristic Model (Hackman & Oldham, 1976) - Job Crafting Theory (Wrzesniewski & Dutton, 2001) - Job rotation is a good example of job redesign. - Giving new tasks/challenges to employees. ### Cons - Sometimes it depends on the person. - It can sometimes not work. - You need to understand your people. ## 5 Diff Types of Job Redesign 1.
