In charge of getting us to the moon. independent regulatory commissions: SEC - regulate the trading of stocks and bonds FCC - Regulate the public airwaves, anything relating to tech. government corporations: Amtrak - nation’s train system USPS - (United States Postal Service) delivers mail on a daily basis FDIC - insure deposits at banks up to 250k. other government agencies: OSHA - workplace safety, hardhats and yellow vests. DNI - synthesize info between the FBI and CIA CPSC - make sure that the products being sold to us are safe. EPA - regulate the amount of pollution allowed (how much companies can pollute) FED - control the money supply Civil Rights Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857) - a slave can never be free, treated them like property under the 5th amendment. If property was damaged the gov must compensate. 13th Amendment - (follows the end of the Civil War, reconstruction amendments) bans “involuntary servitude” (slavery) 14th Amendment - Birthright citizenship. Equal protections clause, trying to make sure states are treating former slaves as equals. Jim Crow - segregation laws. Any law that sets up separate facilities, anything that puts it in place by law is Jim Crow. Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) - test case / equal protections clause / Court allowed separate facilities as long as they are equal / stated that separated facilities does NOT violate the equal protection clause Brown v. Board of Education (1954) - violation to have separate facilities, because they are separate and unequal. EX: Desegregate public schools and buses. de jure segregation - “by law” (ex: any Jim Crow law) de facto segregation - It “organically happens” Civil Rights Act of 1964 - prohibits discrimination in public places of business (why there’s Women’s sports in college) 15th Amendment - African American men are given the right to vote. Smith v. Allwright (all white) (1944) - states make the laws for primaries / state law that only whites could vote in primaries was outlawed for obvious reasons (Allwright… all-white..) 19th Amendment - extends suffrage to women (women allowed to vote) 24th Amendment - does away with poll taxes. Solidifies the states nor the federal government can impede voting Korematsu v. United States (1944) - Japanese internment camps / Court didn’t find that it violated the Equal Protections Act / time of war so their actions were apparently justified Reed v. Reed (1971) - men cannot be given better treatment in legal documents, *FRQ* Defense of Marriage Act 1995 - “marriage is between a man and a woman” (signed by Democratic president) *FRQ* Respect for Marriage Act 2022 - “marriage is between two consenting adults” (also signed by Democratic president) *FRQ* Heart of Atlanta Motel - denies African Americans the right to stay at their motel / immediately sued the motel (test to see if the civil rights laws will work or not) / outcome said that businesses could not discriminate against people FRQ Questions: - 2 Marriage Acts - Heart of Atlanta Motel
