CPU Business & Information Technology College School of TVET Studies Department of Information Technology January 2025 Trainer: Mesfin Assefa Competence: Connecting Hardware Peripherals Learning Outcomes: LO-1:- Confirm Requirements of Clients LO-2:- Obtain Required Peripherals LO-3:- Connect Hardware Peripherals LO-4:- Connect Workstation to the Internet Diagrams and Images of Peripherals, Connectors and Cables Peripherals: Peripherals:- A peripheral is any device that is connected to the outside of a computer and generally used to enhance its abilities or make it more user friendly. This can include things like mice, keyboards, printers, scanners and other input/output devices. Scanners, printers, and speakers are peripheral devices for a computer because they aren't central to the working of the computer itself. Anything peripheral is on the margin, or outside, while main things, like a computer's processor, are not peripheral. Peripherals, cont. Is RAM a Peripheral Device? No. RAM is an integral device, like the CPU. However, peripheral devices like the GPU also require RAM (and an integral CPU) to properly operate. Peripherals, cont. Is a CPU a Peripheral Device? An input/output peripheral device performs both input and output functions. Examples of input/output peripheral devices are computer data storage devices such as disk drive, USB flash drive, memory card, and tape drive. CPU stands for the central processing unit. Connectors, Ports and Cables: Computer ports and connectors are used to connect peripherals and devices to a computer, or to connect computers to networks. Here are some common computer ports and connectors: USB Type-C A slimmer, faster, and more versatile version of the USB port that is replacing USB Type-A, USB Type-B, and microUSB on new computers Serial port A physical interface that transfers information one bit at a time. It was once commonly used to connect a modem or mouse to a PC, but is rarely found on new computers USB port An industry-standard connector that can carry both data and power. USB 3.0 ports are an updated version of the USB-A port that provide higher transfer speeds DVI (Digital Video Interface) Used for video connections between computers and displays. It is becoming less common due to the prevalence of newer interfaces such as HDMI and DisplayPort USB Type B Square connectors with a slight rounding or large square protrusion on the top Audio ports Used to connect external speakers, headphones, or a microphone to a computer. Headphones can be connected through a USB port or a round 3.5-millimetre Connectors, Ports and Cables cont. Connectors, Ports and Cables cont. Connectors, Ports and Cables cont.
