CHAPTERS 5 &6 Chaminade College Preparatory School Original Plan for Chaminade The Beginning ▶The Chaminade College building was completed in 1910 ▶ the property was bought by the St. Louis Province for $23,274.79 ▶ Father August Frische was named first president The Faculty ▶ On June 9,1910 the new faculty of CCP moved into their new residence ▶ 4 Marianists ◦ President - Father August Frische ◦ Treasurer - Brother Michael Lurz ◦ Teachers: ⚫ Brother Henry Grenon ⚫ Brother Charles Hubert ⚫ Bernard Latapie came later to join the faculty Father Frische ▶ His hobby, actually an obsession, was photography ▶ Many of the pictures that hang on the walls at Chaminade today ◦ Over 4050 photos ◦ Kept each negative on file ◦ Journal entry for each photo taken ▶ He named the school “Chaminade College” ▶ He was President for 4 years ▶ Left, and returned in 1932 ▶ Spent his final 15 years at CCP. “A Great Day!” ▶Twelve Students in September of 1910 ◦ Joseph Krekeler…. The Pioneers ▶ When school was ready to open in September, twelve boys had enrolled. ▶ The courses listed for the initial year were: ◦ English grammar and composition, ◦ Latin and Greek, ◦ orthography (study of correct spelling) ◦ reading elocution (diction) English classics, ◦ practical arithmetic, mental arithmetic, ◦ history & geography, ◦ penmanship, ◦ Christian doctrine, ◦ sacred history, ◦ drawing etiquette ◦ a mark in overall excellence. Felix Keaney ▶ The first inquiry came from Mrs. S. R. Keaney of DeSoto, Missouri ▶ By August her son was forever to be remembered as the first accepted student of Chaminade College. ▶ And CCP’s first graduate ▶Entered the navy ◦ Became a surgeon ▶After his career as a doctor, he retired in San Diego The Society’s Objectives 1. The teaching and observance of the Roman Catholic faith. 2. The formation, installation and continuance of the Marianist vision. 3. Academic achievement. 4. Social recognition and respect for civil duty. 5. Physical and athletic advancement. 6. Promotion of cultural activities. Chapter Six The First Decade The First Ten ▶Years The enrollment grew at a steady rate ▶ Marianists insisted that their six prime objectives remain as the purpose and the continuation of Father Chaminade’s vision ▶ The Catholic faith was crucial to the nature of the community, and the faculty encouraged academic excellence. Chaminade ▶ By the end of the decade, Athletics Chaminade was fielding superb football, basketball and baseball teams ▶ competed with area schools at the Varsity, Junior Varsity and freshmen divisions. In fact, by 1921, the basketball team was able to compete in a new gymnasium due to the fund- raising efforts of their coach, Brother Sylvester Juergens. Intramural sports remained popular as well, including boxing, soccer, tennis and swimming. Fine Arts ▶ There were a variety of plays, concerts and festivities produced by the students and their faculty sponsor. ▶ The Shakespeare Dramatic Club took shape and produced several plays a year. Chaminade Statue ▶ The long-awaited unveiling of the Father Chaminade statue took place before a large crowd on Sunday, June 9, 1918. ◦ Shipment of the statue had been delayed because of the war. ▶ Sculpted out of Carrera marble, it was made in Italy ◦ And had arrived during the previous month.
