CHAPTER 5 MANAGEMENT OF RECREATION, PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES TOUR 101 MS. CIARA MAE R. CERVANTES OBJECTIVES  After the completion of the chapter, students will be able to: 1. define what is Management; 2. deliberate the characteristic of Managers; 3. enumerate the skills of the recreation, parks and Leisure Service Manager; and 4. distinguish between Public governmental organizations, Nonprofit government organizations and Commercial/private enterprises. WHAT IS MANAGEMENT?  Management can be thought of as a process of working with individuals to achieve organizational goals.  Management is how businesses organize and direct workflow, operations, and employees to meet company goals. The primary goal of management is to create an environment that lets employees work efficiently and productively. WHO ARE MANAGERS?  They are directly responsible for much of the success or failure of an organization. Indeed, a manager’s competence, reflected his or her skills, knowledge and ability to move an organization forward, and in meeting the needs of those served.  Leisure Service Managers are individuals who have the responsibility and authority to provide direction to a recreation, parks and leisure service organization and who have the ability to move it towards its goal and objectives. CHARACTERISTICS OF MANAGERS CHARACTERISTICS OF MANAGERS 1. Optimism 6. Listening skills 2. The ability to ‘read’ people 7. Self-awareness 3. Clear communication 8. Reliability 4. Empathy 9. Knowledge 5. Self-control Parks and recreation is a terrific industry that can offer a number of fulfilling and rewarding job opportunities. While very specific skill sets are required in certain positions, there are common skills that many (if not all) parks and recreation staff learn to develop over time, whether it’s behind the scenes, front line work, or mostly spent outdoors. These acquired skills are lifelong proficiencies that people carry forward and can be advantageous for their future endeavors. SKILLS OF THE RECREATION, PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICE MANAGER SKILLS OF THE RECREATION, PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICE MANAGER  Leadership This is much more than just managing staff or completing tasks in a timely manner. Rather, it is the ability to build trust and relationships between individuals. Leading a team is about sharing a vision and being able to inspire motivation to achieve that vision. Since parks and recreation organizations often manage a number of projects at any given time, it’s important that individual team members step up to help lead their teams to success. SKILLS OF THE RECREATION, PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICE MANAGER  Organization Since parks and recreation organizations often handle many projects at once, organization is a critical skill to master for positions within the field. Without stellar organizational skills, it can be easy to get lost in the mix of the day-to-day responsibilities. Having organizational skills is an asset to a number of jobs outside of a career in the parks and recreation industry too, since they often help increase efficiency. SKILLS OF THE RECREATION, PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICE MANAGER  Working Well with Others Working efficiently with others is paramount for almost any position, but this is especially significant in a parks and recreation team. With separate project teams working towards an organization’s goals to further environmental conservation efforts, social equity, and the well-being of their communities, being able to complete projects and introduce programs to the community on schedule relies heavily on teamwork. SKILLS OF THE RECREATION, PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICE MANAGER  Communication Communication is crucial within and outside of a parks and recreation organization. Between new projects, community programs, and government proposals, being able to communicate effectively is highly important. In a worst-case scenario, getting your wires crossed and not communicating important information can mean losing government, community support, or memberships at your organization. SKILLS OF THE RECREATION, PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICE MANAGER  Foresight Having a vision for the future of your parks and recreation organization is important for the advancement of the well-being of your community. Seeing the big picture and planning your projects around this vision is crucial, so that you can ensure everything achieved within your project teams will benefit this overarching goal. RECREATION, PARKS AND LEISURE ORGANIZATIONS RECREATION, PARKS AND LEISURE ORGANIZATIONS  Public Governmental Organizations - these are the federal, state, provincial agencies, and local departments that provide recreation and leisure as services as a primary function. Leisure and tourism provision in the local government sector may include: 1. leisure centres and swimming pools 2. libraries 3. parks and recreation facilities 4. arts centres 5. tourism support services  It should be noted that sometimes services are free, sometimes they are subsidized and sometimes they are provided at full commercial rates.  For example, charges for swimming pools are often subsidized but sometimes cover the full cost of provision. On the other hand, facilities such as parks, libraries and children’s playgrounds are generally provided without charge. RECREATION, PARKS AND LEISURE ORGANIZATIONS  Non-profit, non-government organizations (NGO) - These are no-governmental, non-profit agencies, both sectarian and non-sectarian which serve the public at large with multiservice programs that often include a substantial element of recreational opportunity.  BOY SCOUTS, GIRL SCOUTS, YMCA, YWCA and YM-YWHA. RECREATION, PARKS AND LEISURE ORGANIZATIONS  Commercial/Private Enterprises – they provide recreational and social activities for their own members and in some cases assist community recreation needs.  Also included under this category are the recreation sponsors connected to residence such as swimming pools, sports or fitness complexes or clubs attached to leisure villages, and apartments or condominium retirements or retirement communities.
