Caring for Others MAIN IDEA Good character shows in acts of caring. People show their good character by showing they care about others. Caring means treating other people with kindness and understanding. Do you consider other people’s feelings? You show you care when you help and show support to others. Caring people show gratitude to others who help them. They show forgiveness to those who have hurt them. We show that we care by listening, offering to help others, looking at others’ points of views, and providing support when someone needs help. Think about someone you know who is always kind and nice to others. READING CHECK Identify Name three characteristics of caring. The Spirit of Giving One quality found in caring people is the spirit of giving. This doesn’t mean giving of “things,” it means giving of yourself: your time, your attention, your help and support. When you show caring and understanding, you are giving your time and attention. Besides your family, you can also give your time and attention to friends, teachers, and others in your community. Do you have a special talent or skill? You can share your skills and experience with others. Some examples of ways that you can share skills include the following: If you like to cook, you can share food with classmates or a local shelter. If you are good at a sport, you can play with younger students to help them improve their skills. If you speak Spanish, you can give your time tutoring other students at school. Showing Sympathy and Empathy When you care about others, you are kind to them. You show consideration for their feelings. You show sympathy if they feel sad. You show empathy, the ability to understand and share other people’s feelings. If a friend is feeling sad or disappointed, you can show empathy by sharing your friend’s feelings. READING CHECK Define What is empathy? Citizenship MAIN IDEA Good citizens help to make a community a better place. Every individual is a citizen of a community. A community can be your neighborhood, your school, your city, or your country. The way you conduct yourself as a member of a community is citizenship. Citizenship is a part of good character. Teens who obey the rules and follow the laws are good citizens. Citizenship means doing what you can to help the communities in your life.. For example, you might work to protect the environment by recycling paper, bottles, and cans. A good citizen might also take a stand to prevent violence and bullying. Good citizens also volunteer to work with others in helping the community and environment. They advocate, or take a stand to help the community. Caring and citizenship work together. You are a good citizen because you care about other people, the community, and the environment. Use the Character Checklist in the Lesson Resources panel to identify ways to demonstrate caring and citizenship.
