Responsibility MAIN IDEA Your character shows in how you manage your responsibilities. Yuri has a new puppy. He promises to help take care of the dog. Yuri's friend, Jacob, asks him to go see a movie after school. Yuri wants to go, but it is his turn to walk the dog. Yuri calls Jacob and asks if they can go to a movie on another day. He accepts responsibility for taking care of his pet. What are some of your responsibilities right now? Do you take responsibility for completing your school work on time? At home, do you make your bed, help with the dishes or the trash? As you get older, you take on more responsibilities. Accepting responsibility includes accountability. When you are accountable for your actions, you do not blame others for your mistakes. You accept the consequences for your actions. To accept responsibility means to be willing to take on duties and tasks. Showing responsibility means doing what you say you will do. You take credit for things done well and not done so well. When you have a responsibility, you follow through without being asked or reminded. Taking Responsibility for Your Health As you mature, you take responsibility for your health by making good decisions. You learn that making healthful food choices improves your physical and mental health. You learn to make time for physical activity and to avoid risk behaviors. You learn to practice abstinence. The Health Skills Activity shown in the Lesson Resources panel will provide you with practice in identifying your responsibilities to your physical and mental health. READING CHECK Explain What does it mean to be responsible? Fairness MAIN IDEA A person who is fair treats everyone equally and honestly. Abby and her friend Taylor are judging a school art contest. Abby wants to award the prize to Paul because his painting is very good. Taylor wants to award the prize to her friend Katy. "I know Katy is your friend, but Paul really deserves to win," says Abby. "It's only fair to give it to the person who deserves to win." Abby understands the importance of fairness. Good character is demonstrated with fairness. Fairness means treating people equally and honestly. A person with fairness is open-minded and patient. A fair person does not take advantage of another person. Many things that you do, such as taking turns and sharing, demonstrate fairness. Fairness includes being a good sport, win or lose. Many of your actions show responsibility and fairness. For example, you can show fairness while playing sports. Pretend you are playing football with some friends. While you are running with the ball, you accidentally step out of bounds near the goal line. A person on the other team see you step out of bounds. He or she says that you did not score. What would you do? If you admit that you step out of bounds, you are displaying fairness. Use the Character Checklist in the Lesson Resources panel to measure your character for responsibility and fairness. READING CHECK Identify Name two traits of fairness. Being a “Good Winner” It is just as important to be a “good winner” as it is to be “good loser.” Good winners do not brag or tease their opponents. Instead, they look for ways to show respect.
